Fragments of the Lost wasn't at all like I expected it to be, which might sound weird. I read the description and since I love thrillers, I decided to give it a shot. Honestly, when I first started reading, I was a bit disappointed. It didn't sound like a thriller or mystery at all. It read more like a contemporary romance if anything. Each chapter was centered on an object in Caleb's room, and the memories Jessa had connected to these items - of her relationship with Caleb. It was good, but not what I signed up for. I kept reading and finally things started not adding up and a mystery surfaced. The possibilities of what really happened the night Caleb disappeared began to raise lots of questions for Jessa and she needed answers. Interestingly, the further into his belongings she got, the more confused she became. There seemed to be so many secrets hidden from her and lies told to her and all those around them. Although they had broken up, she was feeling guilty about his disappearance and people were blaming her - so Jessa decided she would figure out what happened that night no matter what.
After the pace picked up, the story got a lot more interesting for me. There was a lot more at stake and questions that needed answers. Like any good mystery, there were tons of secrets, lies, hidden parts of people's lives that you thought you knew but really didn't in the end. A big part of the mystery is given away partially through the book, at least I thought so, but it didn't end there. There was so much more to uncover and finally the biggest questions - how? why? I enjoyed figuring things out alongside Jessa, even though some felt a bit obvious to me at times. She was a good main character - realistic and believable, easy to connect with right away. I love that the author told the story from her point of view, because we get to really know her throughout the book and we also get the vivid memories of Caleb connected to the objects she comes across. Although it wasn't a home run thriller/mystery for me personally, I did really like the book. I definitely recommend it for fans of mystery, thrillers, contemporary, and even romance.
