The Keeper's Curse Blog Tour: Guest Post & Giveaway

The Keeper's Curse (The Keeper's Curse #1)
Author: Diana Harrison
Genre: YA Fantasy
Release Date: November 13, 2012

Description:

After fifteen-year-old Emmy Rathers unintentionally summons a strange glowing cloud during a break-in, her mother rips her from her home, her father, and her world, forever.

When she lands in the rustic, militant land of Methelwood, she is told she's a crafter - a person who can perform magic by conjuring souls of the dead. But starting life over normally in the midst of grieving for the life she has left behind, while at the same time attempting to fit in in her new war-obsessed school, becomes impossible when she begins to hear a voice in her head. Complicating the matter further is the fact that the voice belongs to a boy at school named Breckin, who just also happens to be the most powerful crafter in the world, and the future ruler of Methelwood.

But that's not the worst part - suddenly Breckin's most hostile adversary is coming out of the shadows and trying to kill her. With no other choice, Emmy must travel deeper into this bizarre, dark world she is so unfamiliar with to find out why this is happening to her, and more importantly, how to stay alive.

What to Do If You Get Captured By an Evil Overlord:

After having to write a scene in which my main character is kidnapped by the villain, I
came to realize that it’s actually quite difficult to have the MC escape the evil clutches of
darkness without her looking like a Mary Sue or a complete idiot. My villain isn’t
anywhere near an overlord, but the whole living-in-a-castle-away-from-civilization-whilstplanning-to-kill-the-protagonist vibe gives him a few traits. I want to share with you what I’ve learned from the experience, in case you’re ever abducted by an overlord:

1) Unfortunately, the EV (evil overlord) probably will NOT give a five-page long
speech in which he reveals his dastardly scheme, giving you the chance to reach for a
blunt object to hit him over the head with.

2) It’s best to avoid using weapons, because they can be taken from your grasp and
used against you. Since the EV is older and more advanced than you are in fighting, it’s
better to just go for the groin and hit the ground running.

3) Don’t run UP the stairs. This makes absolutely NO sense and I don’t understand
why anybody tries this.

4) If your sidekick has suddenly disappeared from your side, don’t go back. He’s
already tied up, with the EV waiting for you to return to get him. And I hate to say this,
but you’re the MC and far more important – you have to stay alive.

5) Secret passageways, dumbwaiters and the like are better than main corridors
because you’re less likely to run into henchmen, and will get you quicker to the front
door. (Plus, you’ll probably find a weakness of the enemy hiding in the walls.)

6) If you find yourself being guarded by goons while the EV is in the next room
brewing up some evil potion, this is your chance to get away. Do whatever you have to
– the goons are goons for a reason, and therefore have low self esteem (they’re
working for maniac, right?) Insult them as a means of distraction. Insult their methods,
insult their ideals. Tell them they’ll never amount to taking over the world. If all else fails,
tell them their hair is stupid (I would suggest avoiding this tactic with Darth Vader,
Voldemort, and Saruman. This isn’t because they’re possibly a few of the best villains of
all time, but because Darth Vader and Voldemort do not in fact have hair, and Saruman
admittedly has snazzy hair.)

7) If the EV is about to kill you, maybe it’s time *you* do a long, epic speech. It’ll buy
you a few minutes.

8) If all else fails, use the Power of Love. This always works.

You. Are. Welcome.

Thank you for having me on your blog!
