Witch Fall is the third book in the Witch Song series, but it's a prequel to the others and can be read as a stand-alone. The book introduces the reader to leading lady Lilette - a witch who is an outcast within her own kind. The Witches have become incredibly powerful and relish in controlling things like the weather, the seasons, and the sea itself. Their pride has grown enough to blind them to mankind - and the fact that they want the magic songs of the Witches for themselves, to use as weapons against one another. Lilette seems to be the only witch who sees the truth of what the Witches have become, along with the impending war with the humans. Will she be able to convince the witches to help her fight the humans before it's too late?
Within pages of starting this book, I found myself drawn into Lilette's world and her struggles. I ended up reading the entire book in just about one sitting because I couldn't tear myself away from what was happening. I loved Lilette as the main character - she's strong, smart, down to earth, and compassionate. She has her weaknesses and flaws as well, which only made her more realistic and easy for me to identify with. The plot was fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed learning as much as I could about the Witches, their world and history, along with the world around them. The author did a wonderful job describing everything with great detail and vivid imagery - so that I felt like I was inside the book beside Lilette the entire time. There's a lot that goes on in the book, which introduces a new reader to the characters, world, and overall plot to the series - or it gives readers who have read the first two books a deeper look into these places, people, and histories. I never felt confused or overwhelmed with the information, which I believe to be a great asset for readers new to the series. The writing was fast paced but not rushed - it flowed naturally through each scene. Overall, this was a fantastic prequel (or third book) in the series and I highly recommend it for readers who are familiar with the books or those who wish to start them. Fans of fantasy and paranormal fiction will definitely want to pick this one up!
