Fractured Lines (Out of Line #4)
Author: Jen McLaughlin
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Release Date: October 14, 2014

Description:

The lines we once crossed so easily have widened and torn us apart . . .

Once upon a time I thought Finn and I would live happily ever after, but real life doesn't always have a happy ending. He's testing my trust, and I'm losing faith in the man I thought I'd spend the rest of my life with, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. He’s the one I trusted to keep me safe, but now he’s the source of my greatest pain . . .

Forgiveness is fragile, and some fractures never fully heal . . .

One mistake—a slip in a moment of weakness—might cost me everything I've worked so hard for. The thing about trust is that it's a lot easier to lose than it is to build. Just as I'm about to give up and surrender to the demons from my past, an unexpected threat reminds me what I'm best at: protecting the woman I love. Whether or not she wants me, I will fight for Carrie and our daughter, and I will keep them safe—no matter the cost.

Even if I have to put my life and my heart on the line.

Fractured Lines is the fourth book in a New Adult contemporary romance series. I haven't read any of the previous books, so I was a little confused and lost at times during the story - but not to the point where it really affected my reading experience. I think readers should read the books in order so they don't get confused, but it can be read as a stand-alone. This book was definitely not what I was expecting when I started it. I had a stereotype in my mind that New Adult romance dealt mainly with college age characters who fall in love and all that jazz. This book didn't fit that mold at all. The main characters, Finn and Carrie, are married and have a family. I wasn't expecting that, which through me for a loop right off the bat. The story itself was one of forgiveness, love, fear, family, and strength - among other heavy topics. The main characters were well written and easy to identify with - Carrie was especially realistic to me. They both have their secret issues - worries, doubts, and fears among others. They've had a really rocky history together and now it seems that the same issues that almost tore them apart before are threatening to do it again - this time for good. I don't want to do spoilers, so I'll just say that the issues that Carrie and Finn have to deal with are very realistic and apply to our society and culture today. I think that having their lives and problems written in this way makes it much easier for readers to identify with the couple and brings their story close to home. As I said earlier, I didn't read any of the earlier books in the series, so I didn't have a full history of Carrie and Finn's relationship or problems from before - and I think that I was at a disadvantage because of it. If I had "known" them better as characters, I think that the story would have felt more real to me and I would have experienced things differently. Even without reading any of the other books, I can easily say that this story was very well written and I found it fascinating to learn about Finn and Carrie's relationship and how things are going to turn out between them. Definitely recommended for those who have read and enjoyed the previous books in the series, as well as fans of New Adult contemporary romance.
