Description:

The future world is at peace.

Ella Shepherd has dedicated her life to using her unique gift—the ability to enter people’s dreams and memories using technology developed by her mother—to help others relive their happy memories.

But not all is at it seems.

Ella starts seeing impossible things—images of her dead father, warnings of who she cannot trust. Her government recruits her to spy on a rebel group, using her ability to experience—and influence—the memories of traitors. But the leader of the rebels claims they used to be in love—even though Ella’s never met him before in her life. Which can only mean one thing…

Someone’s altered her memory.

Ella’s gift is enough to overthrow a corrupt government or crush a growing rebel group. She is the key to stopping a war she didn’t even know was happening. But if someone else has been inside Ella’s head, she cannot trust her own memories, thoughts, or feelings.

The Body Electric is a thrilling and thought-provoking young adult science fiction novel. It follows our main character, Ella Shepherd, as she learns about her unique ability - to go inside another person's mind. She is able to see their dreams and memories and help them relive special times in their lives, all using the technology her mother created. Things aren't what they seem though, and soon the government has Ella spying on the minds of a rebel group and using her abilities to influence them and their memories. Ella feels that something's not right - especially after seeing images of her dead father. And when the leader of the rebel group tells her that they were in love once, despite the fact that Ella's never even seen or met him before, it can only mean one thing - someone has been inside Ella's mind and has tampered with her memories. A war is brewing between the government and the rebels - with Ella caught in the middle. Now that she knows someone has been messing with her mind, Ella can't trust anything - her thoughts, feelings, or memories - because they might not be hers at all.

This is the first book I've read by this author, and I have to admit that I had pretty high hopes and expectations for it after hearing all the wonderful things about her writing. I got everything I hoped for and then some. Granted, the story line isn't the most original - there are lots of books out there that have a dystopian future where the government is corrupt and a rebel group is growing in order to overthrow them. What I found special about this book was the writing style and the unique twist the author put into the story about Ella's ability to go into other people's minds and her gift to see their dreams and memories. Everything about this part of the book completely fascinated me. I loved learning all about the technology Ella's mother created, how it all worked, how Ella was able to go into someone else's memories and even influence them - it was all intriguing and added a great layer to the plot to make it stand apart from others in the genre. The characters were all well written, with Ella being the most developed. She's a great main character for the book - down to earth, smart, a loving and devoted daughter, and determined to do the right thing. She's faced with some really hard decisions and situations throughout the book, but her character was able to grow and mature in order to handle everything she experienced. I liked watching Ella's character mature from being a somewhat naive teenager into a determined and decisive young adult. The rest of the writing was equally as well done, with a great amount of imagery and description that made me feel as if I were right beside Ella in New Venice. With all the vivid details, I could just shut my eyes and easily envision every single thing that was around us and what was happening. I'm not usually a big reader of science fiction, but this was a book that makes me more curious about the genre as well as the author's other works. This is an exciting and fast paced science fiction novel full of unforeseen twists that fans of the genre as well as those who enjoy dystopias and fantasy will not want to miss out on.
