After a painful break-up in university, Bethany Clarke has sworn off love to focus on her career. From her humble South Side beginnings to her position as an architect intern at a prestigious Chicago firm, she's proven to be a hard worker and is proud of her accomplishments. In three years, she’ll be a fully licensed architect which is more important to her than anything else.
Confirmed bachelor Nicholas Grey is more than the playboy perpetrated by the
tabloids. Now his position as CEO of the architecture firm Grey & Company
is on the line, and his mother’s interference is making things more difficult.
Nick’s committed to his work, but, in order to be taken seriously, he needs to
land a huge project. A stable personal life will help guarantee the contract.
Fairy Godmother Faye Delmore hears Nick’s plea and steps in to help. Posing as
a publicist, she suggests a strategy to polish his public image, which includes
convincing Beth to play his wife. Faye knows Nick needs the huge project to
save his job, but she also knows he needs Beth in his life.
What happens when you add a fairy godmother who loves playing matchmaker into
the equation? A future designed by destiny.
Inspiration: Magic, Discrimination, and Harassment
Designed by Destiny started as a completely different story and eventually evolved into its present form. I had a vague idea of events that I wanted to include: a misunderstanding, divorce settlement negotiation, happily-ever-after, but it wasn’t until I incorporated my fairy godmother that I really had a story.
I introduced my trio of fairy godmothers, Faye, Ginger, and Rainy, in The Magicals Series. I enjoyed writing these ladies so much that I knew they needed stories of their own. However, I write romance and, since I didn’t anticipate giving my fairy godmothers love interests, I needed a heroine and hero. A couple who needed a little nudge in the right direction fit the bill.
One thing I love about romance novels—other than the romance itself—is the ability of the genre to incorporate real life issues. This story included subtle references to racial and economic discrimination as well as workplace harassment. I let issues emerge organically and address them with honesty and candor. My characters are who they are. I let them react as they would.
Discrimination is a tough and loaded subject. As a non-white person (I’m half-Chinese), I have faced some racial discrimination. Being biracial puts me in an in-between place – not quite fitting into either group—Caucasian or Asian. Pre-conceived judgement is a major reason for discrimination. In Designed by Destiny, the hero’s mother takes an instant disliking to the heroine. I hint at economic differences as being the prominent reason rather than race because I saw the mother as an elitist snob who was more concerned with protecting her bank account than her son’s happiness. One of my reviewers commented that she had an “instant visceral hate reaction” to the mother which was the ultimate compliment. The hero is also judged for his past antics which endears him to the heroine as she sees him for the man he wants to be.
Workplace harassment is another topic that has personally affected me. That particular situation had a very negative impact on my life. I have a high standard of morality and sense of justice. When company policy and the law were not abided, I essentially had an existential crisis leading to chronic health issues. When my heroine experiences workplace harassment, my hero stands up for her. The culprit is disciplined and the behavior discontinued. Basically, the outcome I would’ve wished for myself.
Writing is an important outlet for me. I can weave my magic into every word and conclude every story with a happily-ever-after. Through writing, I learn more about myself and, hopefully, my stories will resonate with readers.
Intrigued? Designed by Destiny is available November 15 from Tirgearr Publishing.
