In a world that has ever only known
war, generations still swing their swords on whispers of conflict from
centuries past.
In Physis, the law of the land is
'every territory for itself.' Lineage is everything; racial identification is
paramount; and territory loyalty is the code by which one lives or dies. But
when a few individuals decide the given system isn't working, everything begins
to change.
What will happen to the world when
inherited authority is questioned; when standards of judgement are
re-evaluated; and when independent thinkers redefine purpose for a new
generation of leaders?
In The Refuge by N. Ford, readers travel from the snowy mountain estates of The Diamond Isles to the clay arenas of a warrior's life in Agon. They sail the Physis Sea, chasing mystery and meaning, and swim in the clear pool at the bottom of the Western Bay. Readers will meet love, loss, and sacrifice anew, while discovering what purpose can do when it's authentic and hard-won.
What a thing to dream.
A few of the below people were dreamt up with the characters – LaRoyce Hawkins most especially. I first saw LaRoyce in Chicago PD as Kevin Atwater. I was, and still am, moved by the authenticity LaRoyce is able to bring to the screen. There’s a combination of strength and gentleness that he emulates that inspired much of Jude’s character. If ever the Refuge is brought to the screen, I will be making personal appeals to Mr. Hawkins to be the first to read for the part of Jude.
The other real-time inspiration for a character was in Jonathan’s role. Jonathan’s physical description is inspired by the reggae artist, Benjah. One of Benjah’s album covers portrays his back, painted with tattoos, decorated with dreads, positioned right in the middle of the picture, the ocean lying still before him. This is how I picture Jonathan – body and soul. The stillness of the photo resembles the stillness of Jonathan. Jonathan exists as the unrequited third in a love triangle between his best friend and a woman they both love, but he does not act on his feelings. He lives in a place of neglecting his emotions for the best of others, and he makes those kinds of choices again and again. There’s a stillness that runs deep in Jonathan’s spirit, and yet his existence is a tumultuous one. I don’t know if Benjah acts, but it would be a shame if we couldn’t get him to give it a try for Jonathan’s sake.
Mae’s presence is one of wisdom, truth, and boundless love. Mae is the stalwart foundation of the crew, and she is the constant pillar in her community. Her character is not afraid to be unpopular if it means telling the truth and she’s limitless in what she’s willing to sacrifice for the people who matter most to her. Youn Yuh-Jung carries herself with these traits in admirable affects. She would be a tremendous Mae if she could be so convinced.
I spent some time going through the main characters from the Refuge and matching them with actors that fit their respective roles well, but these weren’t used as real-time inspirations as the above three were. There’s something special about writing while you can see faces and hear voices of the people you imagine them to be, but there’s also something really special about creating the image of a character who does not exist. They are faces that only exist in your imagination and they only move and act and speak as you direct. If ever the Refuge finds its way to a screen, my greatest hope will be only that those who end up in the roles of these characters feel as connected to them as I do, and that they’re as passionate about the Refuge mission as our world could be.
