A glass blower with a unique ability.
Ember Farrow breathes magic into every piece of glass she makes. It’s a gift handed down through generations in her family of fire elementals-- all the way back to when her great-great-grandfather created Cinderella’s slippers.
But then the slippers are stolen. . . and Ember is the prime suspect.
An FBI agent determined to crack the case.
Every criminal claims to be innocent, and Agent Calder Ford isn’t easily convinced. Still, his gut tells him there’s more to this case than meets the eye . . . and the same goes for the fiery woman who challenges him at every turn.
She may not be a crook, but she’s definitely hiding something . . . and Ford’s going to figure out what it is.
A family legacy that could set the world on fire.
Ember must clear her name while hiding a dangerous family secret: The slippers are more than a relic from a fairy tale. They have a dark history and a deadly power of their own. As she and Ford follow the clues to find them, she begins to fear the thief knows exactly what they have and how to use them.
If that’s the case, they’ll be coming for the only other person on earth with that knowledge.
Ember.
The Inspiration for Of Glass and Ashes
I’ve always been interested in the darker side of fairy tales - the Brothers’ Grimm versions, or Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid, where she doesn’t really get the Disney happily-ever-after we all know and love (which I explore in the second book in the Magically Ever After series, Of Songs and Seashells).
When I thought about how I’d like to handle Cinderella, I knew I wanted it to be about the glass slippers, so that led me to the idea of the main character being a magical glass blower who was a descendant of the creator of Cinderella’s slippers. Then I thought, what if those slippers had a darker story? And what if Cinderella was not quite as innocent as we think?
The Brother’s Grimm version of Cinderella is much different than the one we read as kids. For one thing, her stepsisters didn’t only try to cram their foot into that slipper - one actually cut off her toe, and the other cut off part of her heel! It was only when Cinderella’s friends, the birds, sang a song alerting the prince to the blood in the slippers that he realized he had the wrong sister.
In addition, when Cinderella finally got her prince, the stepsisters actually walked down the aisle with her...and those same birds pecked out their eyes, leaving both stepsisters blinded!
Yeah. Gross.
In Of Glass and Ashes, Ember learns that the Grimm version of the fairy tale may have been influenced more by true events than anyone suspected. And when the glass slippers created by her ancestor go missing, she’s the FBI’s prime suspect.
The problem is: Only Ember knows the truth about Cinderella and her slippers, and it’s something that’s been a family secret since they were created. It’s up to Ember to find the thief, but with FBI agent Calder Ford on her tail, keeping the secret may be more difficult than she anticipated.
And if she doesn’t get him on her side, things could go really bad...
