Flicker & Burn Blog Tour: Guest Post + Journal Entry

Welcome to the Flicker & Burn blog tour! Sara Jane is still searching for her family after the events of Cold Fury, but this time she’s on the run from red-eyed beings with pulsing eyes and pale skin known as Ice Cream Creatures. Follow author T.M. Goeglein on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for the next two weeks to read about his inspiration behind the series, creating a “gritty” female protagonist, and more! And the best part? Each stop includes a notebook or journal entry from Sara Jane herself!

Listen and Look, Flicker & Burn

I knew a guy once who knew this other guy who, when asked his thoughts on Metallica and Frank Sinatra, shrugged and said, “I don’t really like music.”

Don’t…really…like…music?

That’s akin to asking someone his thoughts on breathing and getting the answer, “I don’t really like oxygen.”

Until then, it never occurred to me that there were people who were not genetically intertwined with music, or movies, or really good TV and theater. It didn’t seem natural and still doesn’t. You blink your eyes, drink some water, and listen to tunes, right?

Right, at least I do, especially when I write. My relationship with music and film informs the rhythm and arc of my stories. A beautifully sung lyric or acted scene can linger with me for years, and may even spark an entire book. When I was writing FLICKER & BURN, I found myself drawn to songs that reflected the predicament of my protagonist, Sara Jane Rispoli. If I had to put a playlist together for the book, it would look something like this –

My Kind of Town (Chicago is) – Frank Sinatra
Welcome to the Jungle – Guns N’ Roses
It’s a Family Affair – Sly and the Family Stone
99 Problems – Jay Z
Organized Crime – Valhalla
Running with the Devil – Van Halen
Misunderstood – Wilco
Ice Cream – New Young Pony

An important element in the COLD FURY trilogy, especially in FLICKER & BURN, is Sara Jane’s sense of being trapped, and need for escape. I returned to a pair of my favorite movies to feel that experience on screen – The Shawshank Redemption and Catch Me If You Can. Few films combine claustrophobia and urgency in such an intense, entertaining way.

Listen to the music. Watch the movies. Bits and pieces of live in FLICKER & BURN.

About the book:

Flicker & Burn (Cold Fury #2)
Author: T.M. Goeglein
Genre: YA Contemporary Mystery/Thriller
Release Date: August 20, 2013
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile

Description:

Sara Jane Rispoli is still searching for her missing family, but instead of fighting off a turncoat uncle and crooked cops, this time she finds herself on the run from creepy beings with red, pulsing eyes and pale white skin chasing her through the streets in ice cream trucks; they can only be described as Ice Cream Creatures. They're terrifying and hell bent on killing her, but they're also a link to her family, a clue to where they might be and who has them. While she battles these new pursuers, she's also discovering more about her own cold fury and more about the Chicago Outfit, how the past misdeeds--old murders and vendettas--might just be connected to her present and the disappearance of her family. But connecting the dots is tough and time-consuming and may finally be the undoing of her relationship with the handsome Max--who's now her boyfriend. But for his own safety, Sara Jane may have to end this relationship before it even really starts. Her pursuers who've shown her her mother's amputated finger and the head of the Chicago Outfit who's just whistled her in for a sit-down make a romance unthinkable. The only thing that matters is finding her family and keeping everyone she loves alive.

T.M. Goeglein began his career as a writer of print and television ads for a host of advertising and media companies. As a screenwriter, he created both original scripts and worked as a script doctor for several production companies in Los Angeles.

Flicker & Burn is the second book in a young adult contemporary mystery series that continues with our heroine, Sara Jane Rispoli, still searching for her family and still on the run. This time she's up against what she calls Ice Cream Creatures - pale white creatures with red eyes that seem determined to kill her at all costs. On top of dealing with these creatures, Sara Jane is still coming to terms with the information she has learned about her cold fury and the Chicago Outfit - and how it may be connected to her family's past and present. Sara Jane's fresh relationship with Max is being strained by her pursuit of the truth and her concern for his safety may be the end of their relationship. Will Sara Jane be able to figure out her family's connection to the Chicago Outfit before it's too late? And just what are the Ice Cream Creatures and what do they want from her?

This was a thrilling second novel in an exciting YA series. The plot continues to be intriguing with tons of twists and turns that had me eagerly reading to see what was going to happen next. The characters continue to be well rounded and I liked seeing Sara Jane's character continue to mature and grow throughout the book. The plot is a fascinating one that keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat - it's different from most other books in the genre right now. The writing shows the author evident talent with a fast pace, vivid detail and descriptions, and an exciting story line. Highly recommended for fans of YA contemporary mysteries and suspense fiction.
