Three words and they shattered another piece of his heart. The girl he loved sat on the kitchen floor and cried. Jeremiah stood in the hall helpless to comfort her the way he should. The privilege no longer belonged to him. He swallowed to wet his dry throat, but it made no difference. God, help him. He couldn’t stand by and do nothing as his father crouched down beside Bella and failed to pull her back to the present. “Dad?”

“Jeremy, now isn’t a good time.”

“I might be able to calm her down.”

“You sure?” Jamar stood.

Not as much as he’d like to be. Before all confidence completely departed his body, Jeremiah nodded and padded over to Bella. Slowly he sat beside her. Positive she wouldn’t bolt, he hesitated to rest a hand on her back. Her shirt rode too high and her jeans settled too low. A strip of plastic gauze played peek-a-boo from her pants. He dared not think on it too much; otherwise his focus would be deterred. Tenderly he rested a hand on the upper part of her back.

Bella flinched under his touch. Jeremiah snapped his hand away. He waited a moment and eased his hand on her back again. They repeated this back and forth movement three more times. She stilled and he started gentle circles.

Her tears subsided. Bella wiped at her face. “Why? Why did he do this?”

“It’s called a psych-out. Your testimony is the only thing that puts him in that alleyway. If he can keep you from testifying or scare you into recanting, then the rape charge pretty much goes away.”

“I can’t do this. I can’t face him. I can’t testify.” Bella rambled all three statements together; she’d become difficult to understand. The shaking returned and more tears rolled down her reddened cheeks.

Jeremiah hadn’t lifted his hand from her back. He continued to make small circles across her shoulders. It was all he could do.

With a quick nod to his son, Jamar crouched down in front of Bella. “Of course you can. I’ll be there to support you the whole time. As I’m sure your parents will be too.”

“Oh God!” Bella hiccupped a sob. “No, no, no. I can’t... not with them there. They can’t hear it. I don’t want them to hear it.”

“Okay. I’ll talk to the prosecutor. See if he can petition for a closed courtroom, if that will help.”

“Closed courtroom?” As if a weight had been lifted, the tension in her shoulders eased.

“Yes. Most trials are open to the public, but some can be closed so that only those with a direct interest in the case are allowed.”

A bit more relaxed, Bella stood. “Yeah, I’d be okay with that.”

“Good. I’ll talk to the prosecutor Monday.”

Jeremiah stood. He’d successfully calmed her down. With his presence no longer required, he backed out the doorway and disappeared into his room. Surely she’d noticed he was there, but hadn’t uttered one word in his direction. Of course she’d ignored him. He’d destroyed the beautiful relationship they’d had. If he was her, he wouldn’t have said anything to himself either.

“Hey. You all right?” Amanda sat on the bed beside him.

“I’ll survive. Is she still talking to Dad?”

“Yeah. They’re discussing the note she got and the trial. Thought I’d check on you. How come you didn’t stay in there?”

Jeremiah rubbed the top his head. “She doesn’t need me in there. I would’ve just been in the way.”
At the age of 16, Krys Fenner fell in love with Psychology and Creative Writing. At that time she wrote her first short story dealing with sexual abuse and forgiveness. Psychological issues in her family filled her with the desire to help others using her own experiences. So in 2004, she earned an Associate of Arts in Psychology. And while her sister is the one with dreams of becoming a Psychologist, Krys Fenner returned to Creative Writing. She is currently working on a Bachelor of Arts and plans to continue on to a Masters degree, where she can major in her first love (Creative Writing)  and minor in her second (Psychology).

Taking up half the back wall was a huge mirror. Bella readjusted her hair so the scar was covered. God, could she watch as Bobby used the assortment of colored ink bottles on her body. Or stare at herself from that long chair? Her gaze flicked from the chair to the mirror and stopped on her reflection. She inched a step back.

“Do you have something in mind?”

Bobby’s question snapped her out of the downward spiral her mind started. She half nodded and handed him the design. A skull and bones with a tattered pirate flag. Deuteronomy was scrawled in Old English between the tips of the dagger-shaped bones as if it was the name of a ship. The 8 and 5 filled the eye sockets. “This. On my lower back.”

“Okay. Do you want a sugar skull? It’s a bit more feminine.”

“I don’t know what that is, but no. I want that exact design.”

“Okay. Let me get this scaled down.” Bobby disappeared into a back room.

Her eyes settled on the mirror once again. The girl who stared back at her had dead, hollowed hazel eyes, not the vibrant hazel they used to be; skin faded to caramel rather than its natural mocha color; flat black hair, no longer its full, rich midnight; nothing compared to the beautiful man who stood beside her holding a thin hand in his own. Her gaze drifted to David. Tall, well-toned, shiny blue-black hair and piercing blue eyes. What the hell could he see in her? Nothing, but damage. Bella removed her hand from David’s grip and stepped to a wall with picture frames. She needed to distract herself, otherwise she’d never go through with the tattoo. It was important she did. “Do you have one already?”

“Two, actually.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes. Why do you look surprised?” David cracked a smile.

“I guess I just didn’t peg you for someone who would mar his body.”

“I don’t see it that way. It’s a form of art. Besides if it is defiling, then why are you doing it?”

Oh, he really wouldn’t like the answer to that. It matched her darkened soul. Because she desperately needed to feel something besides the emotional pain that weighed her down. Not that she ever intended to disclose those truths to anyone. How could she answer him without actually answering him? “What? I don’t look like the type of person who would get a tattoo?”

“No, but looks can be deceiving.”

“That they can.” Bella muttered.

“You okay? You seem a little on edge since we got back here.”

Thankfully, Bobby picked that moment to walk back into the room. His arrival saved her from an honest response. He patted the chair for her to join him. “Ready?”

“Umm, yeah. So, uh, how do I... how do I sit in this thing?”

“For the low back, you’re going to straddle it.”

Of course. Every inch of her expected him to say those two awful words. But there was no way she could stare at her reflection for however long this would take. She fidgeted with the hem of her shirt. A hand landed on her shoulder and Bella jumped.

“Just me. Are you sure you want to go through with this?”

Bobby looked at Bella. “All your information is stored. If you’re not ready today, you can always come back.”

“No. I want to get it done, I just...” The law said she couldn’t get a tattoo because of her age. Sarresh had helped her with a fake ID, but Heather’s version looked real. For today, she was already eighteen. She had to get it done. There was no room to chicken out.

“Will some adjustments help?” David asked.

How did he know? After all he’d done to help her through this, she owed him. And she knew exactly what they had to do. “Yes.”

Bobby nodded. “Tell me what you need.”

“Can we turn the chair away from the mirror? And can you put a smaller mirror behind me, just where you’ll be working and give me a hand-held one. I have to be able to watch.”

Bobby stood and made quick work of her requests. “Will this do?”

“Yes, thank you.” Bella inhaled a deep breath and swept one leg over the armless chair. It was still awkward, but her nerves had settled more than she could’ve anticipated.

David smiled. “If you need a hand, I’m here.”

“Just talk to me. Yeah, that’ll be good.” She glanced to the hand-held mirror as Bobby tucked a sheet of paper into her pants and swiped a wet, cold wipe along her low-back. Watching made the minor touch easier to handle.

“I’m just wiping your back. I’ll transfer the design, get the colors together and then we’ll get started. Let me know if you need a break at all.”

“Do you think I’ll need one?”

“It depends on your pain tolerance. This is a fleshy area so it’s a good place for a tattoo.”

Pain tolerance? Any other time and she might’ve laughed. She’d taken pain killers that morning. Would she even feel the sting of the needle as it danced across her skin? Maybe she shouldn’t have taken the pills. No, that would’ve been dangerous and unpredictable. Besides, maybe she would still feel some delicious lick of pain. The whirring noise pulled her back into reality and she instantly turned her gaze to Bobby. With a simple nod, she adjusted the mirror.

David leaned back against the wall. “What would you like to talk about?”

“Tell me about the tattoos you have.”

Destroyed is a young adult psychological thriller that I feel should be put under the contemporary fiction category instead. I'm a huge fan of thrillers, with that genre being one of my favorites. I was intrigued when I read that this was a psychological thriller and had some expectations because of that. In my opinion, this book falls more into the category of realistic or contemporary fiction. Don't get me wrong - it's a good book. I just think that the reader should be aware of what they'll actually be reading before they open the cover. I was expecting suspense, twists and turns, and other aspects that thrillers are known for. However, I didn't get any of these inside this book. I don't want to focus my review on the genre labeling, but I feel it's important to know these few things as they impact my review of the book.
As I mentioned above, this is a good book with interesting characters and a quick pace. Bella, the main character of the story, makes a good heroine - although her character and the story itself felt a bit cliched. She's smart, shy, kind, and a 'good girl.' Her character undergoes some growth in the book - she goes from being timid and weak to being strong and more confident by the time the book is over. The obstacles that she faces during the book force her to look inside herself and discover what she's really made of, which is a great example for the reader. She's realistic and pretty easy to identify with, which made the story flow easier for me. The book itself is written in the third person point of view - my least favorite style. I think that writing this way makes the whole story - including the characters - feel distant. You're fully aware that you're reading a story. I'm unable to completely lose myself inside the author's world when a book is written in third person, which makes it very hard to feel like you know the characters and the experience is simply not as intimate. When a book pulls me in from the very beginning and I feel as if I'm right there alongside the characters - that's when I know I'm reading a very well written novel. Most of these are done in first person POV. Some readers might not care about the point of view the book is written from as much as I do, but for me it makes a large impact.
The plot was solid and well written, but I just couldn't get into it fully. I really think it's because I was expecting something completely different - and I was a little confused when the whole thriller part of the story just never really happened. Sure, there were some tense and even suspenseful moments in the book - but not enough to label it a thriller. I know I keep repeating myself, but everything circles back on the fact that I was expecting one thing and got something else entirely. If the novel had been labeled as contemporary fiction - then my review would be totally different, because the various aspects of the book are well done and I didn't have much problem with anything (except for the part I mentioned about feeling the story and characters were a bit cliched). Other readers are sure to have completely different experiences than I did with this novel. These are obviously just my personal observations and opinions. I do recommend it for fans of realistic and contemporary fiction that has a little suspense thrown in.
