Author: Paula Stokes
Release Date: August 28, 2018
Publisher: HarperTeen

Description:

Embry Woods has secrets. Small ones about her past. Bigger ones about her relationship with town hero Luke and her feelings for someone new. But the biggest secret she carries with her is about what happened that night at the Sea Cliff Inn. The fire. The homeless guy. Everyone thinks Embry is a hero, too, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Praise for HIDDEN PIECES:

“Stokes makes the landscape an integral part of the story. Characters, even minor ones, are well developed, as are the subplots. With overtones of Lois Duncan’s I Know What You Did Last Summer (1973), this has the OMG quality that makes you afraid to wonder what will happen next.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“A character-driven mystery perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Deb Caletti.” ―School Library Journal

Things get increasingly dangerous once Winter arrives in Seoul. Aided by her friends Jesse and Sebastian, Winter attempts to infiltrate an international corporation to get close to her target, a nefarious businessman named Kyung.  Title: REVENGE

I flop down on the living room sofa and Baz sits in a chair across from me.

“So,” he says.

“So,” I repeat.

“Back to Ramirez. If you’re not into him, why do you keep stringing him along?”

“This again? I don’t do that,” I say. At least I’ve been trying really hard to keep from doing that.

“Even I can see that you totally send him mixed signals.”

I pull my legs up on the sofa and fold them behind me. “What do you mean?”

“You two were inseparable in St. Louis. Now you’re acting more like cousins who’ve just met for the first time.”

“It’s complicated.” I run the tip of my index finger along the edge of the sofa, hoping that maid shows up sooner rather than later. “I have sent him mixed signals, but some of that is because of my condition.”

“Ah,” Baz says. “Right. I almost forgot that the two of you—”

“Don’t,” I say through clenched teeth. “Don’t say it.”

Baz holds his hands up in self-defense. “Sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it.”

“Why do you care, anyway?” I ask. “It’s not like you’re friends. You treat him like a pet.”

“That’s a little extreme.”

I arch an eyebrow. “Is it?”

Baz stretches his legs out in front of him and crosses them at the ankle. “When I was his age, I was a lot . . . harder than he is, so maybe I don’t always take him seriously. But that’s why I have to look out for him. He’s the sensitive type. I don’t want to see you rip out his heart and toss it in front of a packed express train.”

“Now who’s being extreme?” I pick at a loose thread on the sofa. “I’m not messing with him. I do care about him. I’m just not sure how to reconcile that with who I am.”

“Who are you?”

“I’m broken,” I say. “And I don’t know if there’s a way to fix me. Why would he want to be with someone so screwed up instead of a normal girl?”

“No one is normal.” Baz makes air quotes around the word. “Sometimes love is about finding a person you connect with to a degree where you don’t mind putting up with their issues.” He pauses. “But you just found out about your condition. Don’t write yourself off as unfixable before you even try.”

“Good point,” I say, touched by Baz’s words. “I’ve been meaning to do some research about it, but I can’t focus on anything else right now. Still, even if I could get better someday, I came here to kill someone. That should feel wrong, but it doesn’t. It’s like I’m...blinded by hate.” I grab a throw pillow from the back of the sofa and hug it to my chest. I rest my chin on the edge of it. “I don’t feel very lovable. Sometimes I don’t even feel human anymore.”

“Hate is a very human emotion,” Baz says quietly.

Ferocious lives up to its name and then some. It's a fantastic science fiction novel full of action and thrills, and it's sure to have readers devouring the pages. I've read several of the author's other books, so I'm familiar with her amazing talent and storytelling abilities. This definitely was no exception. The writing was awesome - she brought Winter's world to life in front of my eyes with vivid imagery and detailed descriptions. I easily slipped inside Winter's mind and world right from the beginning of the story, and I didn't come back out until I finished the last words.

Winter is a fierce main character, but she was still easy to connect with. She's been devastated by the loss of the two people in the world she loved, and she's out for revenge. She's determined, smart, resourceful, and strong in so many ways. The author made her realistic in her flaws - including her broken heart over the loss of her sister and her need for revenge and make the people responsible pay. I really liked getting to see inside her mind and experience the story from her perspective. The author wrote the story in the first person - from Winter's point of view, and I'm so happy that she chose to do it this way. It's by far my favorite writing style because of the deeply personal connection it allows the reader to have with the narrator. I think it was a perfect fit for the novel and it brought Winter's story closer for me. I very highly recommend this book for fans of the author, as well as fans of science fiction, dystopia, and thrillers.

Description:

For fans of Gone Girl, I Hunt Killers, and TV's How to Get Away with Murder.

CASE CA4153-228
INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT
LEAD INVESTIGATOR: McGhee, James, Special Agent
SECONDARY INVESTIGATOR: Gonzalez, Alex, Special Agent
PERSON OF INTEREST: DeWitt, Remington

Agent McGhee: Good morning, Senator. I’m sorry we’re meeting under these circumstances. Will your wife be joining us?

Senator DeWitt: Unfortunately she’s not feeling up to speaking at the moment. She suffers from anxiety and today has been particularly rough on her.

Agent McGhee: Okay then. We’ll check back later and see if she’s feeling well enough to answer a few questions. When did you last see Preston?

Senator DeWitt: I had a charity luncheon on Saturday. Pres was there until about three. Then he’d told his mother he was going camping with a friend all weekend.

Agent McGhee: And you started to worry when?

Senator DeWitt: My wife and I both retired around eleven p.m. last night. We knew Preston wasn’t home yet but he’s prone to staying out late with his friends, so it wasn’t until Claudia
woke up around five and realized his bed hadn’t been slept in that she began to worry. She tried calling and texting, but got no answer, so she tracked down the mother of the boy he was supposedly with.

Agent McGhee: Max Cantrell.

Senator DeWitt: Right. Max. Sorry. Preston runs around with so many different people. I lose track.

Agent McGhee: Is there anyone you’d say he spent more time with than his other friends?

Senator DeWitt: The Indian girl from his old school. Parvati something.

Agent McGhee: We’ll track her down. Is she his girlfriend?

Senator DeWitt: I don’t think so, but kids today. It’s hard to tell sometimes.

Agent McGhee: Do you have any idea where Preston might be? Could he have run off for some reason?

Senator DeWitt: To be honest, I never rule anything out with him. Pres can be a bit…reckless. I’ve been understandably busy the past few months. Could this all be a big stunt to make some waves, get some attention? Possibly. But given my political position, I wanted to err on the side of safety. Plus my wife insisted on involving the authorities immediately.

Agent McGhee: Do you know if Preston has been having any personal troubles? Drinking? Drugs? Anything at school or with his friends?

Senator DeWitt: I’m sure he drinks occasionally, but nothing unusual for boys his age. As far as I know, he doesn’t use drugs and if he was having trouble at school, I couldn’t tell. His grades are fine and according to my wife he had everyone over to the house after the homecoming dance a few weeks ago.

Agent Gonzalez: What about you and Preston? How’s your relationship?

Senator DeWitt: I wouldn’t say we’re close, but we see eye to eye on most things.

Agent Gonzalez: So no major fights?

Senator DeWitt: Nothing recent. It’s probably the usual amount of arguing you see between a teenage boy and his father.

Agent Gonzalez: Where were you on Saturday December 3rd?

Senator DeWitt: I was at the luncheon during the day, as I mentioned. Then there was a
small cocktail party thrown by one of my major contributors at Troff, a restaurant in the city from about seven to nine p.m.

Agent McGhee: And what’s the name of this contributor?

Senator DeWitt: Mark Covington of Covington Construction.

Agent McGhee: And then where were you on Sunday?

Senator DeWitt: In my study at home for the most part, going over some paperwork. I watched a little football with my wife in the afternoon. She can verify my whereabouts, as can my housekeeper, Esmeralda Hernandez.

Agent McGhee: Perfect. Thank you very much, Senator. The surveillance team will stay at your house to monitor your phone lines in case Preston calls or someone else calls with a ransom demand. I’ll call you later to see if your wife is feeling well enough to give a statement.

Senator DeWitt: Thank you very much. If you’ll excuse me, I ought to go check on Claudia.
