"Top 10 Favorite/Most Influential Books"

This is a tough choice. When I first fell in love with reading, it was all about Saddle Club books… until I discovered Point Horrors! Growing up my taste has changed (thankfully), but it’s so hard to choose my favourites. I definitely think they all influenced me one way or another. Here’s a shot at some of the books that have stood out the most for me over the years…

Pride & Prejudice – Jane Austen: This book captured my heart from the first time I read it and I think I’ve read it about ten times since! I’m sure it needs no explanation.

The Beach - Alex Garland: Another book I’ve read again and again. I first read it when I was traveling in my early twenties, so maybe I’m a little biased, but I think it’s wonderfully written and the characters very relatable.

River God – Wilbur Smith: So much detail. He combines fact with fiction incredibly. I loved this book and it prompted my traveling stint in Egypt too!

LOTR – J.R.R Tolkien: I’m not sure what needs to be said about Lord of the Rings. It was an epic journey. This was one book I remember never wanting to put down and I don’t think I slept for much of the week it took me to read it. I cried when I finished – I didn’t know what to do with myself!

The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho: I really enjoy his books; they are always very moving and thought provoking.

The Bronze Horseman – Paullina Simons: One of the best sagas I’ve ever read. Loved the characters, loved the combination of fact and fiction and adored the way the story unfolded over so many years. It’s just beautiful. Alexander is the ultimate hero.

Fire Starter – Stephen King: Like so many other people, I love Stephen King books. I was a massive horror fan in my teens. This one keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.

The Lifeguard – Richie Tankersley Cusick: Yes, this was something I read when I was about ten-years-old, but I absolutely loved it. All her books are fantastic; she has an incredible way of writing suspense and romance for young teens. Looking back I think this book was one that helped cement my love of reading.

The Count of Monte Cristo – Alexandre Dumas: Obviously a classic for a reason, it’s an amazing novel. I can’t put my finger on any one thing I loved most, but it swept me up in the action, adventure and romance of it all. It’s been books like this that have influenced my love for story telling.

Harry Potter - JK Rowling: An obvious one, but I can’t deny how much I loved these books. Rowling gave us a wonderful alternate reality to get lost in, which is ultimately why I love to read and write. I have a great respect for the world she created.

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog and sharing your top books with us Samantha!

Born in London, an only child with an overactive imagination, Sam spent much of her childhood telling ghost stories to her younger cousins and dreaming about far away places. She graduated university with a BA in marketing, but it wasn't long before her passion for storytelling and travel got the better of her. She currently lives in Sydney, Australia, where you'll probably find her hidden away in the corner of a park somewhere - writing, reading, dreaming or watching movies on her iPad. She loves everything spy and assassin and has a slightly unhealthy obsession with Star Wars, mainly Darth Vader.

First Light is the first book in a young adult thriller romance series that follows the main character, Veronica "Ronnie" Rose as she deals with the death of her father and the gaping hole he left behind. Ronnie meets the mysterious Kalen Smith - a gorgeous guy that has trouble written all over him. Everyone, including Ronnie herself, tells her she should stay far away from Kalen and his friends. Only she doesn't listen - she wants to know more about him. Soon, Ronnie finds herself falling for Kalen even though she knows she shouldn't.

This is a great first book in an interesting new series. The plot isn't exactly original, but it is well written and has a fresh voice in the genre. The characters are easy to like and identify with, especially Ronnie. She's very vulnerable at the beginning of the story with her father's death and we can see her character changing and growing throughout the novel. There's plenty of action, mystery and suspense in the book, which I thought brought an original blend to the story. The romance is well done for the book - not too overwhelming or corny, but definitely sizzles. Overall, this was a well written and intriguing beginning to a new series that paranormal and fantasy fans will surely enjoy.
