I heard rustling on the other end of the phone line.

“Chloe? Are you–” More rustling. “Dammit, these phone things are awkward.”

My heart began to pound. “Ina? What are you doing–”

“Zeke told me where you were staying a couple weeks back. Seemed a good place to start. Look, I–” The sound became muffled and I heard her say, “I’ll just be a sec, alright?”

A heartbeat passed. I wanted to yell at her to just start talking.

“Okay,” she continued while a door closed somewhere in the background. “Zeke’s why I’m here. Things are… they’re bad right now. You need to stay away from the ocean. Ren’s got soldiers everywhere and…” She trailed off and then muttered something angry. It didn’t sound like English.

“Point is, if they catch you, they’re planning to take you to the capital so Ren can put you on trial and then most likely execute you for Dad’s death.”

Ice shot through me. “What?” I shook my head, the words too ridiculous and insane to process. “Ina, where’s Zeke?”

She hesitated. “He’s been arrested. Granddad too. Ren’s people found us. Niall was with them. I got away but—” She growled another incomprehensible curse. “Doesn’t matter. Just stay away from the ocean. Get back inland. I’ll figure this out, but Zeke… he’d want to know you’re not anywhere they can find you. So just go. I can—”

“No!” I protested.

“Chloe, you have to.”

“I’m so sorry, Chloe,” Noah whispered. “For all of it. Everything that’s come down on you because of me. I’m sorry.”

I trembled at the look in his dark green eyes. At the feeling of his hand on my own, and the memory of how he’d held it all those weeks ago when the dehaian stuff was all new and the worst thing in the world was finding out I wasn’t human.

His other hand came up, brushing back my hair from my cheek. Warm shivers ran through me, like electricity that didn’t hurt at all. “I missed you,” he continued softly.

I swallowed hard, trying to find my voice. “I missed you too.”

He came closer and my gaze fell, tracing the line of his cheek. I could feel his warm breath on my neck, his lips barely an inch from mine.

Description:

For Chloe, the ocean was supposed to mean safety and for a time, it almost did. She overcame the Sylphaen’s drugs. She discovered an unforeseen attraction to Zeke, one that he shares for her. A life underwater seemed possible, until she learned that nothing was as it appeared.

After an unspeakable betrayal shattered everything she thought she knew about Zeke’s world, she and Zeke have fled the ocean for the one place Chloe never expected to want to go.

Home.

But the challenge of living as a mermaid over a thousand miles from the ocean isn’t the only problem facing her. Home has changed. Enemies are waiting, ones she never saw coming. Her little Kansas town is full of surprises.

Including Noah, the guy she left behind.

“…do it in Jeri’s old room.”

Earl’s words filtered through the cotton stuffing in my head, barely making sense.

“Yeah, well, seemed fitting.” He paused. “Listen, Richard, I called you as a courtesy, on account of how you said one got away from you yesterday. But it took me an hour after the girl collapsed to get the boy to finally conk out, and with that damn scum-sucker metabolism of theirs, you know I can’t promise either of ‘em will be down for long. You and your boys want any part of this, you better hurry up and get here.”

Alarm struggled through me, weighed down by an exhaustion that wanted to smother my mind back into sleep. Scum-sucker? He…

“Hang on,” Earl said as though interrupting someone. “One of them ain’t breathing the same as they were.”

My heart began to pound harder while I fought to open my eyes. Breathing? He sounded so far away. How could he hear anyone breathing?

Footsteps clunked on the hardwood floor. Light pierced the blackness around me as I managed to lift my eyelids. I was on the bed, facing the doorway. In the window seat, Zeke was slumped, his head resting on the wall. The room was dark around us, though the hall light was on.

Earl came to the door. In one hand, he held a phone to his ear, and at the sight of me, he made an angry noise.

“What’d I tell you? The girl’s awake.”

He dropped the phone onto the window seat as he strode toward me, and all my dull commands to my muscles couldn’t make my body move. Striding past me, he retrieved something from the dresser and then returned with a sports bottle in his hand.

I tried to pull away, but he just reached down and grabbed my head from behind, lifting it toward him. With his teeth, he popped open the top of the bottle and then shoved it into my mouth.

Bitter-tasting liquid flooded my throat. I choked, the drink spewing from my lips, but he just dropped the bottle and clamped an enormous hand over the lower half of my face.

“Swallow,” he ordered.

I stared up at him. His grip tightened on my hair, tugging at my scalp.

“Now.”

~An Awakened Fate Novella which follows Return, Book Three of the Awakened Fate Series~
The guards took up positions beside me when I left the room and headed for the main hall.

“Princess.”

I tried not to swear, knowing anyone who overheard would only use it as gossip about my current mental state.

But a slew of choice words presented themselves.

This wasn’t fair, I told the universe silently. Not even a little bit.

I glanced back to see Egan swimming down the hall toward me. With his silver scales, dark eyes, and hair so light it seemed like snow even though he was only a year older than me, he looked like a sculptor’s dream, and just as incredible as ever.

It only made me hate him a little bit more. Killing that damn flutter in my stomach would’ve been so much easier if he was ugly.

Noah

Waves rolled into the shore, their white-noise rush undercutting the cries of the seagulls overhead. The afternoon sun glinted on the water, turning the ocean into a rippling fabric of light.

Chloe was gone.

No fins broke the water’s surface, no scales flashed above the waves. The dehaians had disappeared as though they’d never come to Santa Lucina at all.

And if what they’d said was right, there was every chance that, in Chloe’s case at least, she wouldn’t be back for a very long time.

Not with the strength of those drugs in her system.

I turned from the water. The thought hurt, twisting in my chest in a way I’d never experienced before, and I shook my head, trying to drive it away. She was safer out there, safer with her own kind. I hated it, but it was true. Her life was in danger here. Letting her go was the best thing I could do for her.

No matter how hard it was to make myself believe the words.

I reached the shore, my clothes dripping and my sandals squelching under my feet. Shifting my shoulders against the cold fabric clinging to my skin, I glanced back at the ocean, wondering how far away and how deep she was now.

“Well, aren’t you just a picture?”

I turned, tensing as much from surprise as to keep my skin from changing. The greliaran defenses were hard to control, and the last thing I needed was some tourist running off with stories of meeting a monster with fire in his skin on the Santa Lucina shore.

My uncle Richard came down the wooden stairs from the top of the bluffs.

“What are you doing here?” I asked warily.

“Your dad called. Asked us to keep an eye on the place while you all were at the cabin.” Richard looked me up and down, disgust twitching his lip. “You’ve got a lot of nerve.” I didn’t respond.

“Letting her go,” he continued. “Keeping any of them alive.”

“She’s gone now. She can’t come back. It doesn’t matter.”

His mouth curved, though only the most naïve would’ve called the expression a smile.

“You better hope not,” he replied. “I’d hate to have to kill her for you.”
