ABOUT AMALIE HOWARD

AMALIE HOWARD grew up on a small Caribbean island (Trinidad & Tobago) where she spent most of her childhood with her nose buried in a book or running around barefoot, shimmying up mango trees and dreaming of adventure. 25 countries, surfing with sharks and several tattoos later, she has traded in bungee jumping in China for writing the adventures she imagines instead. She isn’t entirely convinced which takes more guts.

An aspiring writer from a young age, Amalie’s poem “The Candle,” written at age twelve, was published in a University of Warwick journal. At fifteen, she was a recipient of a Royal Commonwealth Society Essay Award (a global youth writing competition). “I can’t fight Fate. But I know who can. FuMA. I’m going to let them arrest me. Lock me up, so that I can’t fulfill my memory. Even if I want to.”

He stills. “But then you would be in detainment. For the rest of your life.”

You’ll never see the sun again, a voice inside me whispers. Never get married and have your own family. The inside of a cell will be your home for the rest of your days.

I don’t care. Tears drip onto my cheeks, and I swipe them away. This is my sister we’re talking about. My sister.

“I can’t imagine ever doing what my future self did.” I swallow hard. “But it happened. So I can’t guarantee I won’t change my mind.” I straighten my shoulders. “The safest thing for me to do is take the decision out of my hands. And FuMA’s offering to do just that.”

He closes the distance between us. “You can’t turn yourself in, Callie. Think about what you’re saying.”

“Both you and the Chairwoman said it—the hand of Fate is strong. I have to take extreme measures in order to defeat it. What can be more extreme than going to detainment?”

He opens his mouth, but before he can say anything, I twist away and look down the hill. 

“They’re coming.”

A fast-moving pack of bloodhounds drag along a blur of guards in navy and white uniforms. They’ve just begun their ascent, but the dogs are galloping up the slope, as if they can’t wait to rip me apart. I’ve got a minute, tops.

My hand closes around the black chip, and I pull it from my pocket. Without another thought, I throw it as hard as I can over the precipice. There. It’s gone. Just because I’m turning myself in doesn’t mean I have to tell them about Jessa. They don’t need any more reason to investigate her.

I turn back to Logan. His eyes pierce me with an expression of deep, unspeakable regret. Does he actually care? Underneath the years of silence and betrayal, does a kernel of friendship still remain?

“I’m sorry, Callie.”

There’s so much I want to say. I’m going away, for a very long time. This is my last chance to reconcile our old hurts. The last time to feel a real, human connection.

My last chance for a kiss. Oh, how I want to lean forward and press my lips against his. I don’t want to die having never kissed a boy.

But there’s no time. The dogs’ barks shatter the air like the rat-tat-tat of a machine gun. We hear the scuffle of feet against dirt. The officers will be on top of us at any moment.

“Go!” I shout at Logan. “Get out of here, before they arrest you, too.”

He opens his mouth to say something, but I shake my head. “Don’t. Don’t make this any harder than it is.”

With his eyebrows pulled together, Logan nods, gives my arm one last squeeze, and disappears over the other side of the hill.

This is it. My last few moments of freedom.

Turning, I raise my hands in surrender. I take a deep breath, savoring the openness of the mountain air. And then I walk straight toward the officers.

About the Author

When her first-grade teacher asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, Pintip replied, “An author.” Although she has pursued other interests over the years, this dream has never wavered.

Pintip graduated from Harvard University, magna cum laude, with an A.B. in English Literature and Language. She received her J.D. at Yale Law School, where she was an editor of the YALE LAW JOURNAL. I shoved my hands into my pockets, jiggling the loose change and wanting some kind of confrontation. I stepped outside. That girl with Byron who’d been staring and laughing earlier was candidate numero uno. Want to diss me? Do it to my face, chica.

    I found her healing a gash on some guy’s cheek, holding a vase in her free hand while berating him for his choice in headwear. “Va bene. Go,” she ordered.

He slunk away with a sheepish look and I stepped up, my shadow falling over her.

“If you need medical services it better not be alcohol poisoning because I will not let you enjoy it.” She turned. Her fingers tightened on the rim of the vase at the sight of me.

“Hi,” I said.

She raised her chin, regarding me levelly with these amazing dark brown eyes. “It’s you.” Her sexy Italian accent hooked into me.

“Apparently.”

She fumbled the vase.

    We both grabbed the same edge before it could hit the ground, my hand landing on hers. Her skin was cool and smooth. The rest of her was twitchy and flustered. It cheered me up in a petty way.

    “Rafael. Call me Rafa. Official friend of the Byron–Jones hook up.” I patted my shirt down with my free hand. “I had a badge but I lost it.”

    “Next time ask for a lanyard.” She tugged the vase away with a slight smile, tucking it under her arm like a football. What a mouth. ¡Dios mío! “I didn’t buy tickets to the event,” she said.

    I pretended to look stern, mostly because I wanted to check her out some more. “You boycotting the games?”

    That got me a full–on grin, which hit me in the gut. Who was this girl and how had I never seen her before?

    “Seen one game, seen them all,” she said. She walked briskly past me back to the swing she’d been sitting on earlier and set the vase on the table.

    I followed, sinking into the chair beside her. “You know my name. It seems unfair I don’t know yours.”

    She hesitated for long enough that I wasn’t sure she was going to answer with anything other than “get lost.” “Francesca,” she said at last. She flicked her bangs off her forehead. “My mom works for your dad. You’re Javier’s son, right?”

    Those words were like a douse of cold water. “Yeah.” I waited for her next words. Her next look. Her obvious disdain. I stiffened, reminded of why I had come out here in the first place and ready to rip into her.

“She’s a Liaison.” Even for the simplest of sentences, her hands gestured madly. Cute. “Mirella

Bellafiore.”

    My heart sunk. Now I knew exactly who she was. And wished I didn’t. Francesca Bellafiore, golden girl. Latest pride and joy of the Bellafiore clan and totally off–limits to me. Javier would freak, which would be fun, but honestly? Good girls weren’t my thing. “Yeah, sure. I’ve met her. Guess you’re excited to start all that healing stuff.”

Disappointment and contempt? flickered in her eyes. Apparently hot girl and I were natural enemies. Figures. I wasn’t about to be an asshole to her though. It would ruin my façade.

    I was about to make my excuses and go, but I noticed her twisting this hideous bracelet tighter and tighter into her arm. “You okay?”

Her hand stilled. “Are you reading me?”

“No,” I said with exaggerated patience. “I don’t go around reading everyone I meet. Don’t need to most of the time. People telegraph enough on their own.” I nodded at her reddened skin. She jutted her chin out. “People shouldn’t take everything at face value.”

When he fixes his light eyes on me, a swirling inferno spreads under my skin despite the ocean breeze wafting through the door. “I don’t have an official appointment, but I called and talked to Rocko earlier. He said it was cool if I came by.”

One look from him and a thousand hormonal dominoes tip over and click to every part of my body that can get hot or wet or racing.

“Okay,” she continued while a door closed somewhere in the background. “Zeke’s why I’m here. Things are… they’re bad right now. You need to stay away from the ocean. Ren’s got soldiers everywhere and…” She trailed off and then muttered something angry. It didn’t sound like English. 

“Point is, if they catch you, they’re planning to take you to the capital so Ren can put you on trial and then most likely execute you for Dad’s death.”

Ice shot through me. “What?” I shook my head, the words too ridiculous and insane to process. “Ina, where’s Zeke?”

She hesitated. “He’s been arrested. Granddad too. Ren’s people found us. Niall was with them. I got away but—” She growled another incomprehensible curse. “Doesn’t matter. Just stay away from the ocean. Get back inland. I’ll figure this out, but Zeke… he’d want to know you’re not anywhere they can find you. So just go. I can—”

“No!” I protested.

“Chloe, you have to.”
