Release Day Celebration: Escaping Eleven by Jerri Chisholm

Escaping Eleven
Author: Jerri Chisholm
Genre: YA Science Fiction/Dystopia
Release Date: December 8, 2020
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Description:

In Compound Eleven, the hierarchy of the floors is everything.

My name is Eve Hamilton, and on my floor, we fight.

Which at least is better than the bottom floor, where they toil away in misery. Only the top floor has any ease in this harsh world; they rule from their gilded offices.

Because four generations ago, Earth was rendered uninhabitable—the sun too hot, the land too barren. Those who remained were forced underground. While not a perfect life down here, I’ve learned to survive as a fighter.

Except my latest match is different. Instead of someone from the circuit, my opponent is a mysterious boy from the top floor. And the look in his eyes tells me he’s different…maybe even kind.

Right before he kicks my ass.

Still, there’s something about him—something that says he could be my salvation...or my undoing. Because I’m no longer content to just survive in Eleven. Today, I'm ready to fight for more than my next meal: I'm fighting for my freedom. And this boy may just be the edge I've been waiting on.

My debut novel ESCAPING ELEVEN will be released soon—December 8th, to be exact. And so it might seem like my “journey”, so to speak, is just beginning. In fact, it began many years ago when I was working in the legal profession, fresh out of school, flipping through files the size of my fist, perusing insurance form after insurance form after…insurance form. Fascinating as those insurance forms may have been, I couldn’t help but daydream of something else. Something that had been planted like a seed in my brain years earlier…

See, my childhood was spent mostly with books. No siblings to play with, not a great number of friends. Books! My happiest memories from those formative years involved said books, a comfortable couch, and a large block of unscheduled time. Probably some snacks, too. And with every book that I read, that little seed germinated, it grew into a desire to create stories of my own…

At the time of flipping through insurance forms, however, it seemed purely fantastical that creating—and selling—stories could ever come to fruition. After all, my schooling had taken a purely professional turn: policy studies, then law. Creative writing wasn’t something I knew how to do. Right?

Right. My first book-writing attempt turned out terribly. Even my attempt to explain the plotline to family didn’t go so well, and what I thought were powerful symbols—such as a dead deer, for instance—quickly became memes within my own home. To make matters worse, it had taken two full years to write, which felt like a huge waste of time.

But, of course, what our parents teach us is (usually) true. It wasn’t a waste of time…it was a learning experience. Indeed, the next novel I wrote came into existence in a much more efficient manner, thanks largely to an outline created at the front end. Knowing exactly where I wanted the story to go before I started writing meant I finished it in a matter of months, not years. Progress—definite progress. Unfortunately, the final product still wasn’t bookstore quality. Nonetheless, I sent it out to agents, a lot of them, just in case they could see something magical sparkling inside…

They couldn’t. It was rejected across the board.

Another…learning experience.

And then it struck me that perhaps I could learn a few things about creative writing by doing some research. Some studying on the craft. I bought up a bunch of books on the topic, my favorite being Stephen King’s On Writing. All of this was so helpful that I was a little embarrassed I hadn’t thought to do it sooner. Oh, and I did that other imperative thing you must do if you want to become a writer…I kept writing.

Finally, after a flurry of writing projects, some completed and some not, I came up with ESCAPING ELEVEN. Right away I thought it had potential. I thought that it was a page-turner, I even thought it had that elusive quality…voice. I thought maybe, just maybe, some agent out there and then some editor would think that too. And that’s what happened.

It didn’t happen overnight, just as seeds don’t sprout into oak trees without a great deal of time, patience, and nurturing. But eventually, with perseverance, those daydreams I had while perusing insurance forms turned into reality. A long, yet totally worthwhile, journey.

But Valentine's Day sucks when you're single. Just ask Juliet Valentine, whose last name happens to also be the name of the most dreaded made-up holiday ever.

A romantic at heart, this year is especially hard on Juliet. Her sister, Layla, is in a new relationship, her mom's match-making business is doing great, and her school's new fundraiser is "Love-Grams."

Juliet's miserable, a little jealous, and lonely.

Quarterback Jared Black is the most popular guy in school. A star athlete, Jared tops the most-eligible bachelor list year after year. But to Juliet Valentine, he's all but invisible. She isn't impressed.

Jared's never had to work hard to get the attention of a girl before. Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and he's determined to ask Juliet out. After all, if Tyler can win over Layla, Jared ought to have a shot with Layla's sister.

Unlike Tyler and Layla, charm, flattery and good looks won't work on Juliet. So with the V-Day dance coming up, Jared uses the school’s Love-Grams to let Juliet know how he feels. Should be simple enough, right?

Wrong. Each attempt ends up either in the trash or thrown in someone's face. Juliet won't play his game.

THE MAGNIFICENT GLASS GLOBE
Author: N.R. Bergeson
Release Date: April 10, 2017
Publisher: Tantrum Books
Format: Paperback, eBook
Pages: 273

Description:

Eleven-year-old Mary Tucker dreams of visiting the Amazon. But if her father, a museum curator, has his way, she might be a grandmother before she ever gets the chance.

One day, while mischievously exploring the museum’s warehouse with her brother Ike and best friend Helen, Mary stumbles across an old travel trunk belonging to her grandfather.

Inside, they discover an nondescript glass globe. Curious about the simple object, Mary touches the globe, and is shocked when the room is suddenly consumed by the most amazing view of Earth.

The magnificent globe lets the friends zoom closer and closer toward the earth’s surface, eventually bringing them close enough to touch the trees. That's when the globe entirely disappears, and they find themselves falling.

Suddenly, they're far from home, in place that's either a paradise, or the place where they will die.

Sleep, water, and food become precious and scarce. A native tribe may hold the keys to their survival as well as clues to help them get back home. But it won’t be easy. The rain forest is a big place, and when others find out what the globe can do, Mary, Ike and Helen will need a plan, allies, and a little luck.
“Dad, I really want to go to the Amazon!” she blurted out. “You know my twelfth birthday is coming up next year. Maybe we could make it a family trip?”
“Now hold on there, Mary,” Dad interrupted with a laugh. “We’ve talked about this time and time again. You know how expensive and difficult it is to take a big trip like that.”
“I know, but I’ll do anything you ask. I can do extra chores for a year, or I could … ”
Mary could tell by the smile on his face that he wasn’t taking her seriously.
“Dad, if we send Mary to the Amazon, can I have her room?” Ike asked.
“Nobody’s going to the Amazon,” said Dad. “For crying out loud, your own father runs one of the biggest museums in all of South Carolina. We can enjoy places without actually having to go there.”
“But Dad! Please? Will you at least think about it?” Mary begged.
“I’m sorry, my girl,” Dad said. “But the only place we’re traveling to right now is home for dinner. If we don’t get there soon, your mother might banish me to the Amazon. Let’s not hear any more about this traveling nonsense, okay?”
“Yes, sir,” Mary said, deflated.
There had to be some way to convince him. Pestering Dad for months on end to let her travel was clearly not working. “Not until you’re older,” she was always told. But Mary didn’t think she could be that patient. It wouldn’t be easy to convince Dad to change his mind, and she knew her dream was a big one. But she was smart enough to find away. Maybe she was just going about all wrong. Maybe if she started smaller …
“If we can’t go to the Amazon, could we at least go to Disneyworld?” she asked, flashing her father a big smile.
“Oooohhh, I’d like to second that motion,” Ike said, also beaming.
“I volunteer to come as a chaperone,” Helen offered.
“Why me?” Dad said, raising both hands into the air while talking toward the sky.
Mary and Ike laughed as they said goodbye to Helen, who waited as her father, the museum’s head of security, locked up the building.
I’ll find a way to convince him, Mary told herself as she buckled her seatbelt.
If there was a way, she’d figure it out. After all, she’d never given up on anything before.

GENESIS GIRL (Blank Slate #1)
Author: Jennifer Bardsley
Release Date: June 14, 2016
Publisher: Month9Books
Format: Hardcover, Paperback, eBook
Pages: 280

Description:

Eighteen-year-old Blanca has lived a sheltered life. Her entire childhood has been spent at Tabula Rasa School where she’s been protected from the Internet.

Blanca has never been online and doesn’t even know how to text. Her lack of a virtual footprint makes her extremely valuable, and upon graduation, Blanca and those like her are sold to the highest bidders.

Blanca is purchased by Cal McNeal, who uses her to achieve personal gain. But the McNeals are soon horrified by just how obedient and non-defiant Blanca is. All those mind-numbing years locked away from society have made her mind almost impenetrable.

By the time Blanca is ready to think for herself, she is trapped. Her only chance of escape is to go online.

I look to where he points, and the flash of thumb-cameras blinds me. Vestals must never have their pictures taken by random people. That privilege belongs to the companies that purchase them and market a Vestal’s privacy one advertisement at a time. I reach my arms out by instinct, to protect my face from the public. “I’m fine with it,” I lie, pulling my hands down. “But we better leave now or we’ll be late to the restaurant.”

“My dad can wait a few minutes.” Seth scoops me in his arms.

“Blanca!” one of the spectators calls. “And Veritas Rex! Is that really you?”

Seth holds up his hand and wiggles his finger-chips. “The one and only!” Then he dips me back for a kiss.

I stiffen like cardboard. “Stop it,” I mumble, trying not to squirm. All I can think about is the cameras, my face flashed worldwide and weirdoes slobbering over my private moment with Seth.

“We’ve got to go or we’ll be late.”

Seth kisses my nose. “I didn’t know you were so punctual.”

“Yes.” I pull myself out of his grasp. “Cal’s waiting.” The sooner I put my helmet on and get back on my motorcycle, the better.

“Blanca,” a man calls as we ride away. “I love you! I’ve watched you all year!”

Underneath my jacket, I shiver. The fame that surrounds me is chilling.
