For one-thousand years, Druid prophecies foretold of a young witch destined to alter the fate of both human and immortal alike. This witch-turned-vampire would be capable of harnessing the supernatural abilities of both and, in a bloody rise to power, would rule with unwavering control.
Unwillingly thrust into a world she never dreamed existed, Liz Markum is catapulted into an ancient war between rival vampire factions. She must choose between those she loves and the ever-present darkness attempting to devour her very soul.
Only one question remains: Will Liz claim her birthright or surrender to the dark gift?
One choice.
One chance.
Two destinies.
Review:
Birthright is the first book in the young adult paranormal The Dark Gifts series. The book follows the heroine, Liz, as she must find out who and what she has become, protect those closest to her, and fight in an ancient war between vampires. Will Liz accept her destiny?
This book is very well written and is full of action and romance, among other things. Although it is a paranormal novel that deals with ancient wars between supernatural beings and prophecies foretelling the future, there are a lot of deeper topics being dealt with throughout the story. Love, fate, courage, and believing in yourself are all prominent themes in this series. The characters are well rounded and have unique personalities, especially Liz. She is very realistic and (some) of her problems are common, which makes it easy to like and identify with her as the heroine.
The romance in the book is a good level -just the right amount of tension and steam without going overboard. The plot is very well written and is taut with excitement, action and mystery, which definitely made this a page-turner that I couldn't put down. Although the concept of vampires and ancient wars isn't a new one, I think that this novel gives a fresh look into the topic and has it's own merits with the characters, romance, action, and intricate history. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series!
