Description:

It’s been twenty three days since Quinn has slept for more than minutes at a time. Demons have invaded her dreams, stalking her, and whispering of her death. The lack of sleep and crippling fear are ruining her life. Energy drinks and caffeine pills don’t make a dent. When Quinn dozes off in the school hallway, Aaron, an amnesiac with a psychic ability, accidentally enters her nightmare. The demons are determined to keep them apart, and Aaron from discovering the secret locked away in his memory. Together, they could banish the darkness back to the underworld for good. That is, unless the demons kill them first.

Pretty Dark Nothing is a young adult paranormal novel that tells the story of Quinn Taylor - head cheerleader, pretty, popular, good student - until she begins having terrible nightmares. Soon the darkness from her dreams seeps into her waking hours, where she sees a terrible fog and winged demons who whisper demands and doubts into her mind. Quinn's life is falling apart fast - she can't sleep, is suspended from cheerleading, is failing some of her subjects in school, and is still heartbroken after her boyfriend, Jeff, dumped her two months ago. Enter the ruggedly handsome and mysterious Aaron into the picture. He's always there when Quinn is at her worst and needs help. He makes her feel safe and calm when nobody else can. Quinn is finally starting to believe that Aaron will be able to make her visions stop; that she can be free of the demons and be happy with him. Aaron has his own secrets, and Quinn seems to be pushing him away at every turn. Will they be able to rescue each other before it's too late?

This story immediately had me intrigued after reading the description. It sounded like a great paranormal romance with some action and thrills thrown in. The plot itself was incredibly fascinating and had tons of potential, but I feel like parts of the book didn't quite live up to what it could've been. The characters were realistic, but I found Quinn to be a bit whiny and cliched - especially when it came to her love life. She was really annoying when it came to her feelings about her ex-boyfriend and then Aaron - she never could find a balance and just came across as clingy and annoying to me at times. The same could be said about Aaron and his feelings for Quinn, although they weren't as irksome to me. They both kept playing some sort of game with each other and themselves and I got tired of it fast. Aside from that big drama mess, the plot was really interesting and I loved trying to figure out what was really happening. The paranormal aspects of the story were great and I wished that we got to learn more about what was really happening. The story had a wide open ending with lots of questions unanswered, so I'm hoping there will be at least a sequel, if not a series. Like I mentioned, this book has serious potential and I think the next book will come into it's own and really explore the plot and deepen the characters. The writing itself was well done and had a fast pace that kept me reading - and guessing - as fast as I could. I'm really hoping that this was a first book in a series and that the author will culminate the story and the characters to reach their full potential. It has the ability to becoming a must-read if just a few little tweaks are done. Definitely recommended for fans of YA paranormal romance.
