The Deepest Poison is an exciting prequel novella to the science fiction/steampunk Clockwork Dagger series. The story gives the reader a peek into Octavia's past and gives them a better understanding of who she is and how she came to be that way. Because this is a prequel novella, you don't have to read any of the full books in the series first. Although there might be a bit of foreshadowing as to what will happen in the series. The writing was fast paced and thrilling. Since the story is only 48 pages long, it felt like I was just getting to really know the characters - and then it was over. Despite it's short length, Octavia's character is well-rounded and the reader is able to identify with her from the very start of the story. I loved learning about her healing powers, which I'm sure will be more detailed and will grow in the full length novels. There was a bit of mystery mixed in, when Octavia and her mentor are called to the frontlines of the war and must figure out how to stop a deadly illness that's killing thousands of soldiers.

I haven't read the first book in the series, so I went into this novella without knowing what to expect. I wasn't quite sure that I was going to like the story, but the author's writing and the suspenseful events had me sucked in before I knew it. Even though it's a bit outside my normal reading, I'm going to have to read at least the first book in this series - even if it's just to see if I enjoy it as much as I did the novella. If the writing and plot are even half as good as this short story was - you can bet that I'll be captured once more by Octavia and her world. Very highly recommended for fans of the series, as well as those who enjoy reading fantasy, science fiction, action, mystery, and steampunk fiction.

Beth Cato hails from Hanford, California, but currently writes and bakes cookies in a lair outside of Phoenix, Arizona. She shares the household with a hockey-loving husband, a number-obsessed son, and a cat the size of a canned ham.
