Description:

Lengard is a secret government facility for extraordinary people,” they told me.

I believed them. That was my mistake.

There isn’t anyone else in the world like me.

I’m different. I’m an anomaly. I’m a monster.

For two years, six months, fourteen days, eleven hours and sixteen minutes, Subject Six-Eight-Four — ‘Jane Doe’ — has been locked away and experimented on, without uttering a single word.

As Jane’s resolve begins to crack under the influence of her new — and unexpectedly kind — evaluator, she uncovers the truth about Lengard’s mysterious ‘program’, discovering that her own secret is at the heart of a sinister plot…and one wrong move, one wrong word, could change the world.
Whisper is a fantastic young adult fantasy novel that fans of the genre are going to adore. I was sucked into the story almost immediately and ended up reading the entire book in one sitting. Pretty much every aspect of the story was great, in my opinion, and I don't really have any major dislikes. Here's a breakdown of the positives for me:

Characters - All of the characters, including secondary and minor, were well written and distinctive. The major characters were complex and realistic and I liked getting to know each of them. As for our main character, "Jane Doe," she was wonderful. She had a lot of positive traits that made her stand out. She's strong - both mentally and physically, determined, stubborn, smart, down to earth, and tough. She goes through a lot in the story and she refuses to give in or break. I liked watching her character grow and change as the book progressed, especially when she started relationships with other characters. I loved getting to know her on a deep level and seeing her overcome her fears and other obstacles she faced.

Mystery - There are a couple big mysteries in the story that Jane has to figure out before she can move on with her life. The main one being what Lengard is, what is this "program" she's supposed to be a part of, and why do they want her so badly? Another mystery is for the reader, since Jane already knows. She keeps referring to an event in her past that made her quit talking completely because of the horrible consequences. I thought it was pretty obvious what happened from early on in the story, but that could've been just me.

An awesome surprise - The last big plus for me is one I can say without revealing any kind of spoilers. I'm just going to say that it made the story awesome and doubled my fascination with everything - Lengard, the program, the characters - the reader finds out what connects all of these things. And for once it's not all horrible. There's some amazing things we find out about and for me it made the book that much better. Overall, this is definitely one that I would recommend for fans of YA fantasy, supernatural, science fiction, and even contemporary.
Lynette Noni studied journalism and academic writing at university before completing a degree in human behavior. She lives on the Sunshine Coast in Australia and can be found baking cupcakes, singing along to animated movies, or daydreaming about being swept away to a fantasy world. Some days, she can even do all three at once — and still find the time to sneak in a nap afterwards.
