Publisher’s Synopsis:
Li Li Wang is enjoying Chinese New Year with her family when her grandparents ask her to sit with them. Before giving Li Li her holiday gift, they tell her the story of Ting Ting Wang, Li Li’s ancestor, and how she became a Chinese hero. Li Li carefully listens as her grandparents tell her about Ting Ting, the monster Nian, and the origin of the Chinese New Year celebration. Ting Ting, the Girl Who Saved China provides insight into China’s biggest holiday, gives a sense of its culture, and shows that girls are just as strong and brave as boys.

Ting Ting, the Girl Who Saved China is a fantastic historical tale for kids. Many people - including children - don't know much about other cultures, their histories, or their traditions. This book is a wonderful introduction to both the history of China and of the Chinese New Year. The author wrote the book in an interesting and fun way, so kids are learning things without really knowing it. The illustrations are full of color and match the story perfectly, which makes it an even more entertaining story. I personally have little knowledge of Chinese customs and history, so I ended up learning a few things from reading this book. It's a great way to also promote feminism and girl power since the hero of the story, Ting Ting, is a girl. I found this book to be a wonderful read on several levels - learning about Chinese New Year, history, and folkore; a tale of a strong girl who must overcome huge obstacles; and an overall fascinating story. I definitely recommend this book for kids in the target audience range as well as older readers and even adults who are interested in learning more about this holiday and culture.
