When Mom Feels Great, Then We Do Too! Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

When Mom Feels Great, Then We Do Too!
Written by Phyllis Schwartz
Illustrated by Siski Kalla
Publisher: Acorn Publishing
Ages 4+ | 38 Pages

Publisher’s Book Summary:

When Mom, one day, came home and said, “I think I better get in bed”

It was up to us to get together

As a team so she’d feel better

We came up with all sorts of things to do

Because “when mom feels great then we do too!”

When Mom Feels Great, Then We Do Too! is a sweet picture book that talks about all the different things the kids do to help their Mom feel better after she's diagnosed with cancer. It had a good rhythm and rhyme scheme for the most part, although I thought there were a couple spots that were a bit awkward. The book felt very personal to the author and the story definitely reflects this with references to the Mom's favorite food and special socks she likes to wear. The pictures were bright and filled each page. They went along perfectly with the story and will be a great visual aid for children when they're reading or having someone read to them. I'd recommend this book for kids who are learning to read and ones who like to have stories read to them.

Phyllis Schwartz is a married mother of two, who, after a highly successful career in the TV news business, finally has the luxury to indulge in and focus on her “civilian” writing. Even as a kid, she kept a diary and wrote little stories and poems, a creative release that continued well into adulthood. She wrote news by day and poetry by night. And despite battling three different types of cancer over more than three decades, she is still filled with energy, joy, and optimism, and she looks forward to writing more poetry and children’s books.

Her writing centers on the beauty she finds daily: Her friends, husband, and two children, as well as her garden and her beautiful beach town residence in dreamy Encinitas, provide continued inspiration for her verse.

Anything But Pink is a cute and fun book that also teaches kids a wonderful and essential lesson. The main character, Zinnia, is pink but the rest of the people in her city are gold. She gets made fun of at school and it makes her feel bad about herself and she decides she wants to change her color to gold so she can look like everyone else. Along her journey, she meets three new friends who are all different from everyone else like she is. They each teach her an important lesson about not only accepting yourself but loving who you are and not letting other people make you feel bad about who you are or what you look like. The message is a necessary one, especially in today's society, and the story delivers it in a cute adventure. The illustrations were all full page with lots of vivid colors and went along perfectly with what was happening in the story. I think this is a fantastic book for kids of all ages to read - especially those who are too little to read themselves and enjoy being read to and for children who are learning to read by themselves.

J.C. Benthin has been writing since a young age winning a Father’s Day essay contest with the Kansas City Star justifying “Why my Dad’s the Best Outdoorsman” which won a John Deere Lawnmower and a Weber Grill. She has written Timmy the Time Machine, Pink Princess, and Anything but a Prince for a next-generation interactive children’s publisher. She has also written two young adult novels titled Catapult and Slingshot in The Kingston Chronicles Series. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). Meow Is Not a Cat Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

Meow Is Not a Cat
Written by Kelly Tills
Illustrated by Max Saladrigas
Ages 4+ | 44 Pages
Publisher: FDI Publishing LLC

Synopsis:

Meow is definitely not a cat. Cats lick their butts. Follow along as this wild child’s unique way of following instructions ends up going a little bananas.

Meow Is Not Cat is a completely goofy story, guaranteed to make kids laugh. With a cynical cat, wild monkeys, butt jokes, and a banana cannon, even pre-readers will love shouting out their favorite parts as you read aloud. Nestled among the laughs is a lesson about how embracing a person’s different way of interpreting the world can lead to surprisingly good results —and bananas, lots of bananas.

Meow Is Not a Cat is a quirky children's picture book about a young girl whose nickname is "Meow." She tends not to listen to her teacher and does really absurd things all the time, but in the end it's her unusual nature that saves the day. The story was very original and a quick read. I personally like when picture books have a nice rhyme scheme but this book didn't go with that writing style. I felt that there wasn't a natural flow to the story and that made it a little harder to get into. The illustrations were bright and went along perfectly with the plot. There was a nice mix of full page pictures and smaller images alongside the text. I think this is an unique book that young children who enjoy being read to as well as kids learning how to read themselves will like.
Kelly Tills is the creator of her own uniquely shaped family. Kindness, neurodiversity, and potty humor are her jam. She writes silly stories for kids and believes even the smallest hat-tip, in the simplest of books, can teach our kids how to approach the world. Kelly’s children’s stories are perfect to read aloud to your little humans or to have your older kids read to you (hey, let them flex those new reading skills!). Either way, you’ll enjoy the giggles.
