Two crowns. Two kingdoms. One chance to rule.
Nor and King
Casper are captured by the fay army and forced to face the indomitable Faerie
Queen, Marasina. At her command, Casper is thrown into a mysterious prison
while an even sinister fate is in store for Nor―a deadly fay poison that
reveals Nor’s true nature. She’s not only half-fay. She is Queen Marasina’s
heir.
Revealed to
be like the very creatures she despises, Nor must not only find a way to free
Casper but also navigate a court that is as deadly as it is beautiful. Her
allies are few, and though Pel claims to want friendship, Nor finds she cannot
forgive his betrayal. As tensions mount and war looms between the kingdoms, Nor
must choose a side, before it’s too late.
In this epic
conclusion to the Gold Spun duology, Nor discovers that a
glamour and a curse may be two sides of the same coin.
A deleted scene or a scene from another character's POV.
This is an earlier draft of the beginning of the book with Nor and Casper trying to get through a mist barrier that separates the human and faerie lands.
After what might have been a few minutes or perhaps only a few seconds, Casper and I stumbled out of the fog. Just as before, the sun was brightly shinning, and beyond the wall of mist the air was clear. We both stood, panting for breath. I wiped the dew from my face, relieved to see more than a few feet ahead of me again. Though it had not been long, the feeling in the mist was one of being in another world, one of being utterly lost.
“We did it Nor!” Casper cried, the joy and relief in his voice as palpable as that in my chest. He leaned in kissed me. His lips were hot on mine, and reassuringly solid after the vapers of the mist. I was just leaning in when he seemed to realize himself and pull back. “I didn’t mean to Nor. I was caught in the moment.”
“Of course,” I said, stepping back, but his distance stung. Nonetheless, I forced a smile. “But look we made it out.”
Casper smiled, and a trickle of his confidence back in place. “That’s right. Look, the sky. It was so strange in there, not being able to see anything.”
I followed his gaze, appreciating the spots of bright blue sky between the green leaves. I could not believe how much I missed color, though I had only been away from it for such a short time.
“We should be back at the Rose Palace in a day or two. If we are off course, there are at least several outlying villages. We could get hospitality from any one of them. What I wouldn’t give for a real meal. And a hot bath…”
Casper kept talk, but I stopped listening. Something about a nearby oak had caught my attention. Something fluttered in the breeze of one of the branches, and a deep fear started in the pit of my stomach as I stepped closer.
“Nor, are you even listening to me?”
“Casper, look.” I pointed at the tree. I tried to swallow down the horror, but I couldn’t.
“What?” Casper started, but he also made his way to the tree. I got there first, reaching up to yank down the fabric that had been impaled on a branch. I stared at the torn material, dread threatening to overwhelm me.
The ripped fabric was a dirty velvet that has once been a fine red. Embroidered on it was once a golden pattern of a spinning wheel. The same pattern on my own ruined skirt. Without saying a word, I lowered the fabric to where my skirt had ripped during my fall from the tree. The wheel patterned aligned perfectly.
By Chace’s den, we were so screwed.
Brandie June
spent most of her childhood onstage or reading, as both activities let her live
in fantastic stories. She moved to Los Angeles to study acting at UCLA, and
eventually branched out into costume design and playwriting. While she spends
most of her free time writing, she will still take any excuse to play dress-up,
especially if it involves wearing a crown. She happily promotes more stories as
a marketing director for kids’ films and anime. When not writing or marketing,
she can often be found doing aerial arts, playing board games, drinking too
much espresso, and coming up with new art projects. She lives with her husband,
two spoiled rescue pups, a spoiled cat, six fish tanks, and five bookshelves.
