The gift of magic may be a curse.
After her
desert-transforming wish, Emel follows Saalim to Madinat Almulihi to reclaim
all she has lost. But the seaside city is not what she expected. When she is
tasked with assisting the palace healer, she is faced daily with the reminder
that Saalim―focused only on seeking the revenge of those who killed his
family―does not remember her at all.
Cursing the
magic that destroyed her love and brought her to an unwelcoming city, Emel
regrets her decision to leave her settlement. That is, until she meets Kas.
Though inscrutable, he is the first person to help her forget her past, and the
pull of finding happiness with him tempts her from the life she wished for with
Saalim.
But darkness
waits in the desert, and not all people in Madinat Almulihi are what they seem.
When Emel understands she is entangled in the fate of the city―and of
Saalim―she is faced with the realization that magic may be the most powerful
card in her hand. It might be the only way to save all that she loves, but if
she plays her hand wrong, it could destroy everything.

I adore books about people and their complicated emotions and baggage that shape how they interact within their environment. Particularly, I am fond of love stories as emotions seem to get very complicated when love is involved. In no particular order, I’ve given my top 5 favorite books. Of no surprise, they all have some sort of love story!
3. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers—This book is simply so much fun. To me it’s Friends meets Star Trek, and I read this entire series just to enjoy the insanely detailed sci-fi world that Chambers has created. There’s no epic space battles, but if you want to know how this or that alien manages basic hygiene and interacting with other alien species, then this is your jam. Plus there is a heart-breaking love story in this one that really makes you flex your brain since it’s quite an unconventional couple...
5. A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness—This is such a smart historical fiction/fantasy novel. It feels completely believable despite there being witches and vampires and a whole lot of other things. I consider this Twilight for adults. I love this book now as much as I loved Twilight as a teenager.
If you’ve read any of these or end up reading any of these on my recommendation, find me on social media and tell me what you thought. I’d love to fangirl with you!
