Discovery of the Five Senses is an original young adult novel that blends science fiction and fantasy with action and adventure. The plot was unique and had great potential, but it felt like it got buried under too many other things going on. We're introduced to a ton of characters right off the bat, and we don't even know who the main characters are for awhile. The author wrote the story in the third person, so it was even harder for me to make a connection to any of the characters. The writing was well done and had lots of vivid imagery and detailed descriptions. I felt that the imagery was a bit overdone and was part of the reason the main story line got lost for me. The author combined several different genres to make a unique novel, but it felt like too much at once. The plot was jumping all over the place - from the reserve and the light beings there (fantasy), to the neighboring town that was being overtaken by a dark character (science fiction), and then there were the narratives of each character mixed in. I got confused quickly and because I couldn't connect to any of the characters, my mind wandered and I lost focus multiple times. Please remember that this is my own personal experience and opinion and isn't meant to reflect poorly on the book or the author. Lots of other readers will enjoy all the elements that the author wove together to create this novel. I'd recommend it to fans of YA fiction, fantasy, science fiction, contemporary fiction, and action/adventure.
