Book Blitz + Giveaway: Days Like This by Danielle Ellison

Days Like This
Author: Danielle Ellison
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Release Date: June 2, 2015
Publisher: Bookish Group Press

Summary from Goodreads:

Sometimes the only thing standing between fear and hope is yourself.

Almost a year ago, nineteen-year-old Cassie Harlen had a lot to deal with. A stack of college acceptance letters waiting for answers, a proposal from the boy next door, and a mother whose most recent bipolar episode left Cassie hurt and confused. Tired of cleaning up the messes caused by her mother's disorder, of resenting her mother for not being there, and scared of being trapped by an inevitable future—which included marrying Graham Tucker—Cassie did the only thing she could think of to keep from ending up like her mother: she left.

Graham never knew why Cassie walked away. He woke up one morning and she was gone—along with the life that he’d created around her. After eleven months, Graham has a new plan for his future. One that doesn't involve Cassie Harlen.

When Cassie's mom nearly burns down her house, Cassie’s forced to return home. Back to a mother she’s tried to ignore and the guy she’s been unable to forget. Graham doesn't know how he's going to spend the whole summer living next door to the person who broke his heart without letting those old feelings push through to the surface.

Neither does Cassie.

I knew Cass was coming. Hell, I was the one who called her, but until she was standing there refusing to make eye contact—it was hard to believe it was true. We’d barely said two words to each other since we left her house. I didn’t really know what to say to her. Well, I knew what to say to her, but I also knew I couldn’t. It wasn’t the time, and I wasn’t an ass. She made herself pretty clear last time I saw her. God, I wished she’d didn’t look so damn good. If she looked bad all this would be easier.

And maybe I wouldn’t want to kiss her so much.

God, I wanted to kiss her.

I had to shake that off. I had a girlfriend, and Cassie was here, but it didn’t change anything. I opened the door to the guest room, and turned the light on for her. In the light of the room, she was radiant. She’d always been beautiful, but today, there was something else, a sadness that rarely defined her, but now it seemed so engrained.

I knew right then what I really wanted for her: I hoped that when she left she found the thing that made her happy. That the sadness in her eyes was only the situation, and not what she had become. I cared too much about her to see her swallowed in sadness.

“This looks nice,” Cassie said. “Very different.”

When I met her gaze, I recognized a glimmer of the girl I used to love. What did she see in this room? The brown and blue paint that used to cover it? The pictures of her and me that used to plaster the walls? The Clash poster that hung on the closet door? The basketball trophies? The first time we fumbled our way through sex when we were sixteen on that very bed? We’d improved a lot since that first time. The last time I made her yell my name over and over, and it always felt awesome to be the one to make her come. I had everything I could ever want, and all of it was her, especially in that last moment we had together. I felt like a king as she called my name as I moved inside her, I caught a glint of my diamond on her finger. I’d thought in that moment that she’d be mine forever in every way possible. That’d we have this for the rest of our lives. The memory was as vivid as if it had been yesterday, even though it’d been months.

I cleared my throat. Stop thinking about that. “A lot has changed.”
Danielle Ellison spent most of her childhood reading instead of learning math. It's probably the reason she can't divide without a calculator and has spent her life seeking the next adventure. It's also probably the reason she's had so many different zip codes and jobs.

When she’s not writing, Danielle is probably  eating cookies, fighting her nomadic urges, watching too much TV, or dreaming of the day when she can be British. She has settled in Northern Virginia, for now, but you can always find her on twitter @DanielleEWrites.

Follow Me Through Darkness is an intriguing first book in a new YA dystopian trilogy. It follows main character, Neely, as she learns the awful plan the Elders have in store for everyone living inside the Compound - with her at the very center of it all. Everyone at the Compound has been taught that the land outside their walls was destroyed and dangerous. Neely's eyes have been opened and she realizes that the Elders have been lying to everyone for their own benefit. When she reads their plan for total mind control of the Compound residents, Neely knows that she must escape the Compound and face the dangers of the outside if there's any hope of saving everyone she loves. She's under a strict countdown - 40 days until the Elder's plan goes into effect - and she has to figure out who to trust, where to go for answers, and how to stop the Elders before it's too late.

The plot of the book was relatively original, which is difficult to accomplish within the science fiction/dystopian genre. I found the world building to be fascinating and wanted to learn as much as I could about everything - the (true) history of Neely's world, what the Compound is and what happens there, the kind of lives the various types of people throughout Neely's world lived - anything that could give me insight and information about the setting, characters, and the intricacies of the plot. The author did a great job with providing me with this information and I'm hoping that we'll get to learn even more in the next book. It did take the story a little while to get going - it was a bit slow at first - but once the action started happening, it didn't stop until the end. One thing that was a bit confusing at first and may have had a negative effect on my experience with the book was the extreme amount of jumping around in time. The story is split up into small sections - almost like journal entries - that begin with the countdown until the Elder's plan goes into effect. The story jumps from the present to months and even years before Neely leaving the compound, which had me confused and trying to remember the order things happened in. Because I was confused about the time frame and what was happening when, I found that I couldn't immerse myself into the book like I normally can. If it wasn't for that bit of confusion on my part, I believe I would have had an even better reading experience than I did. The characters, especially Neely, were all well written and had realistic flaws and strengths. It was easy for me to identify with Neely and root for her throughout the story. There's so much potential for this series and I'm really hoping that the jumping around in time will be less confusing for me or just in general during the book. I'll definitely be reading the next book to see what happens next and to see how the various aspects of the story are written. Definitely recommended for fans of science fiction and dystopian novels, along with those who enjoy fantasy and post-apocalyptic fiction.

Storm is the second book in a fast-paced and thrilling young adult paranormal series that revolves around witches, magic, and demons. It picks up right where the first book left off. Penelope - our main character - has finally come into her own as a witch. She no longer has to rely on others for their powers, because now she has more magic that she ever imagined. On top of getting her magic, she also became an Enforcer - a group of elite witches that hunt and kill demons. Now that everything seems to be going in the right direction for Penelope - things in the witch community are turning strange and horrific. Witches who didn't have magic before now have immense powers and the elite witches, like Penelope, who swore to protect the world from the demons, are gaining more power and more magic - and it's changing them, but not in a good way. Penelope's starting to change too - and it's up to Carter to figure out what's behind the sudden magic mayhem before things get worse - and Penelope and the other witches change into dangerous, evil people drunk on power.

This book picked right up where the first one left off, so it only took me a few sentences before I was pulled right back into Penelope's world. I'm a huge fan of any fiction that has witches, so I was immediately drawn to this series. After finishing the first book, I only wanted more. My hopes were pretty high for this book and I'm so glad to say that I wasn't disappointed in the least. It was just as good as the first. The characters continued to grow and mature as they learned more about their magic and their places in the witch community. I also loved watching Carter and Penelope's relationship grow. Penelope continued to be a fantastic main character - strong, smart, powerful, and devoted to her friends and family. She totally kicked butt and I loved it. The plot was original and had an air of mystery - I was on the edge of my seat almost the entire time trying to figure out what was really going on and how Carter and Penelope were going to stop it. There's some great twists thrown into the story to keep you guessing, and the narrative was really fast paced - to the point that I couldn't stop reading and ended up finishing the entire book in one sitting. I love the writing style that the author uses - it's conversational, so the reader feels like they get to know the narrator on a more personal level than with other points of view. That's always a big benefit for me, especially when I really love the storyline and want to fully immerse myself in the world the author created. If you're a fan of paranormal fiction - especially witches - you need to check out this series. Like yesterday. I also highly recommend it to fans of other genres, including fantasy, romance, action, and mystery. There's a bit of something for everyone to enjoy - and with a refreshing plot and fantastic characters - all types of readers will find themselves enchanted by this series.

Danielle Ellison is from a small town in West Virginia. She spent her childhood pretending to fly, talking to imaginary friends, and telling stories. She hasn’t changed much since then. You can still find her pretending to work, talking to imaginary characters, and writing stories. When she’s not writing, Danielle is probably drinking coffee, fighting her nomadic urges, watching too much TV, or dreaming of the day when she can be British. She is the author of five upcoming novels and you can find her on twitter @DanielleEWrites.
