I've been waiting impatiently for this book to be released for months now - ever since I read the description. After the long wait, I'm so happy to say that the novel far surpassed any hopes and expectations I may have had beforehand. It's a true breath of fresh air and unlike anything I've read before. The setting - Regency London - is the perfect background for the story and easily sets the scene and the mood for the book, which just happens to be dark and Gothic - favorites of mine. The characters were all well written - especially Lady Helen, the story's main character. She's a fantastic lead for the book - intelligent, full of burning curiosity and determination, along with being a young woman of high society that feels as if she doesn't quite fit the mold required of her station. I immediately identified with her character and loved watching her mature and come into her own throughout the book. She's a great main character for this new series, and I can't wait to see what she'll get herself into.

The plot was intriguing and instantly had me hooked from the first pages. I don't read much historical fiction, but the blend of this time period with the paranormal aspects was a perfect fit for me. I enjoyed the entire story line - from the small details of Lady Helen's life and the time period the book's set in to the creepy demons that are lurking around and infiltrating society on all levels. The author used the perfect mix of detailed descriptions and vivid imagery - it brought the story to life in front of my eyes and I felt like I was inside Lady Helen's world right beside her the entire length of the book. The story was written in the third person point of view, which isn't my favorite. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll know that I'm a huge advocate for the first person POV due to the deeply personal connection the reader makes with the story's narrator. No other writing style is able to give us such an in-depth look at a character to the point where we know almost every single thing about them by the end of the book. The third person POV doesn't allow such a deep connection between the reader and the main character; however, the author was able to bring the characters and the story to life for me as a reader, which is always a sign of their talents and writing ability (in my opinion). If an author can bring a story to life using the third person perspective, it's a huge accomplishment in my book and only provides more evidence of their storytelling abilities. 

Overall, this was a mesmerizing novel that had a few great twists, plenty of surprises, and a plot that almost instantly pulled me inside of its pages. I can't wait to see where the next book will go and what Lady Helen will get herself into. I very highly recommend this book to fans of all types of literature - especially those who enjoy historical fiction, Regency settings, fantasy, paranormal fiction, and mysteries. You're going to want to get your hands on a copy of this book - I promise it won't disappoint!

Triple Moon is the exciting young adult spin-off novel from the author's Witches of East End series. I absolutely loved the entire Witches of East End trilogy, and really enjoyed the Lifetime show based off the books while it was on the air. The author created such a vivid world full of magic, romance, and mythology in the series - I never wanted the books to end. When I saw that there was going to be a YA spin-off that takes readers back to East End, I basically freaked out at the thought of slipping back inside that world and even getting to read about one of my favorite characters - Ingrid Beauchamp - from the original series. I'll admit that I had high hopes and expectations for this book due to my previous experience with the author's writing. I'm so happy to say that this novel didn't disappoint in the least. 

The main characters in the book - Mardi and Molly - are teen witches who are having issues controlling their magic and are sent to stay with their "Aunt" Ingrid on East End, so she can teach them how to harness and use their powers. If the girls can't get things under control soon, they're going to be sent to Limbo by the White Council. Both of the girls were great female leads for the book - they're smart, determined, loving daughters and sisters with awesome magical abilities. They definitely personify a certain type of teenage girl - sassy attitudes, lots of complaints and whining, a fantastic wardrobe, beautiful (and they know it), and loads of confidence. I was a bit hesitant about them at first - I wasn't sure how (or even if) their characters were going to grow and change throughout the book, but I got tired of the whole "Mean Girl" stereotype fast. Luckily, both girls undergo a lot of change and growth during the story, including growing up and gaining maturity. By the end of the novel, I loved their characters almost as much as the sisters from the original series. 

The plot wasn't completely original, but the author's writing style along with the complex characters and fascinating story line made it stand out from others like it in the genre. There were a few cliches throughout the book - like the stereotypical teenage female image that the girls have at the beginning, along with a few other points - but these things are bound to happen at least once in every book, so it didn't really bother me. The romantic aspect of the book was a great addition, especially because guys are Gardiner brothers (another throwback to the original series). With the book being set at East End with the Beauchamps and the Gardiners - and all of the magic and romance brewing - I felt like I was back inside the original world the author created, and that nothing had really changed that much except for the characters names and the different time frame. All of these attributes made it incredibly easy for me to slip right back into East End and it felt as if I had never really left. The story moves at a pretty decent pace - which picks up speed as the book continues - and I found myself completely absorbed in its pages until I finished the final page. I really enjoyed this book and loved learning about all of the new characters, Limbo and the White Council, along with any kind of history or information I could get about everything and anything related to the story. I'm really hoping that the author decides to turn this into a new series - one book just isn't enough! Now that I've revisited East End, the Beauchamps, and the magic - I want to keep going back for more adventures. I highly recommend this novel to fans of the genre as well as those who enjoyed the original series and readers who like magic, witches, and romance.

I can see Ash singing this in the shower. It's got that old-school feel that I know she'd love.

This is just one of those songs Ash would listen to on repeat and drive her brother crazy with.

Ash would be completely into Sparklehorse. The lyrics alone are breathtaking.

7. Gasoline and Matches --Buddy Miller and Julie Miller
I can picture Ash singing this in the car with all the windows rolled down.

8. What You Do To Me-- Blakroc
Another song with that old-school feel, but with a modern edge.

9. Use Me-- Holly Golightly
This song really captures how Ash feels about her brother's warning about Dane.

10. And It Spread-- The Avett Brothers
I think Ash would dig this band.

11. Lust For Life-- Iggy Pop
I can see Ash belting this at the top of her lungs. Who doesn't love Iggy Pop?

12. Push That Knot Away-- KT Tunstall
This song has a pent-up quality, that I know Ash would be able to relate to. She's spent her whole life trying to push away the feelings inside of her.

13. Boys Wanna Be Her-- Peaches
A great song to close out this list. Ash is a badass. I want to be her. Yes, I do.

Rise of the Male Protagonist!

From Frodo to Harry Potter to Percy Jackson, where would we be without the male protagonist?

My daughter and I have read every Percy Jackson book. We’ve also read Thomas’s fast-paced ordeals in The Maze Runner, and Jacob’s quest to solve his grandfather’s mystery in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. When we pick up a book, like most readers, it’s not the protagonist’s gender that keeps the book in our hands – it’s the story.

Okay, we may not want to admit this, but most readers are female. Yes, there are males who read. Lots of them. This past semester, I had two male students who constantly had their heads buried in books of fiction instead of their riveting psychology texts. But typically speaking, females read more and according to popular theory, females prefer to read about female characters.

Sure, we like to view the world through our protagonist’s eyes, and if the protagonist just happens to be a different gender, it might be a little tougher to relate. But where would Hazel Grace Lancaster be without Augustus Waters? Where would Katniss be without Peeta? Yes, these males aren’t the protagonists in their stories, but they are critically important characters and as readers (whether we’re male or female) we can relate to them.

If a person looks at the variety of young adult fiction coming out this year, they will see several covers with female characters. But wait! There are also a number of titles coming out with males not only on the covers, but as the main characters.

So what does this mean?

Could it be that more males are becoming fans of the YA genre? Could it mean that guys love a great story as much as females do? Yes, that’s part of it. I think another part is that we’re a very diversified society, a society where females can pull for male characters and relate to them, as much as they can pull for and relate to the Haze Graces of the world.

As a writer, I think of characters. Recently I tried to change a male protagonist into a female one because, to be honest, that would make the book more marketable. But it wouldn’t work. When I tried to turn Will into Willow, Will threw a fit and not surprisingly so.

For Deadly Design, Kyle was always a male. He just was. Could the story have happened with a female main character? Absolutely. Would female readers like it more? That, I don’t know.

I do know that readers today are very sophisticated and that minds love to be expanded and entertained. I hope that Kyle’s story of genetic manipulations and survival is one that will appeal to male and female readers and that most of all, they’ll find it entertaining and enlightening.
