Undeadly (The Reaper Diaries #1)
Author: Michele Vail
Genre: YA Fantasy/Paranormal
Release Date: November 20, 2012
Publisher: Harlequin Teen

The day I turned 16, my boyfriend-to-be died. I brought him back to life. Then things got a little weird...

Molly Bartolucci wants to blend in, date hottie Rick and keep her zombie-raising abilities on the down-low. Then the god Anubis chooses her to become a reaper—and she accidentally undoes the work of another reaper, Rath. Within days, she's shipped off to the Nekyia Academy, an elite boarding school that trains the best necromancers in the world. And her personal reaping tutor? Rath.

Life at Nekyia has its plusses. Molly has her own personal ghoul, for one. Rick follows her there out of the blue, for another...except, there's something a little off about him. When students at the academy start to die and Rath disappears, Molly starts to wonder if anything is as it seems. Only one thing is certain—-Molly's got an undeadly knack for finding trouble....

Undeadly is the first book in a fun new young adult paranormal series that follows Molly Bartolucci as she finds out that she is not only a necromancer, but has been chosen by Anubis - the god of death - himself to be the Champion of the Underworld. Molly just wanted to live a normal teenage life - turn sixteen, start dating the hot football star at school, get her driver's license, and survive high school. Now everything in her life is turned upside down and she soon finds herself at Nekyia Academy - a pricey boarding school for the top necromancers in the world. While trying to deal with all the changes in her life, Molly meets and has to train with the obnoxious and totally hot Rath, and try to stop a soul stealing monster from killing her classmates.

I found this book to be a fun and fast paced read. The main character, Molly, is witty, sarcastic, and totally likable. I found myself immediately identifying with her. The dialogue and inside thoughts of Molly were very realistic and felt natural, so it was easy to fall into the story. The history and main concept of the book were very intriguing - I found myself devouring all the information about necromancers, reapers, and all the Egyptian mythology. I really loved the attention to detail and in depth descriptions that the author used to build the backstory. It added lots of layers and was really unique to the genre - which made it really stand out for me. The romance wasn't really a big part of the story, which I liked because it didn't overshadow the main plot. There were small steamy parts throughout the book and it definitely opened doors to future relationships to develop. The writing was really well done and flowed effortlessly. The narrative managed to intertwine several plot lines - both big and small - together without overwhelming or confusing the reader. Overall, I think this is a really fantastic first book in a fun and exciting new series. I will definitely be awaiting the next book to come out!
