In this magical romance from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Long Live the Pumpkin Queen, an illness cursing the land forces a teen girl astronomer to venture across the wilderness in search of the stars’ message that will, hopefully, save them all.

When all is lost, look to the stars.

Vega has lived in the valley her whole life—forbidden by her mother to leave  the safety of its borders because of the unknown threats waiting for her in the  wilds beyond. But when Vega sees an omen in the sky—one she cannot ignore—she  is forced to leave the protective boundaries of the valley. Yet the outside  world is much more terrifying than Vega could have ever imagined. People are  gravely sick—they lose their eyesight and their hearing, just before they lose  their lives.

But Vega has a secret: she is the Last Astronomer—a title carried from generation to generation—and she is the only one who understands the knowledge  of the stars. Knowledge that could hold the key to a cure. So when locals spot  the tattoo on Vega’s neck in the shape of a constellation—the mark of an  astronomer—chaos erupts. Fearing for her life, Vega is rescued by a girl named Cricket who leads her to Noah, a boy marked by his own mysterious tattoos.

On the run from the men hunting her, Vega sets out across the plains with Cricket and Noah, in search of a fabled cure kept secret by the astronomers. But as the line between friends and protectors begins to blur, Vega must decide whether to safeguard the sacred knowledge of the astronomers…or if she will risk everything to try to save them all.

A Wilderness of Stars is another fantastic young adult novel by the incredibly talented Shea Ernshaw. I've read several of her other books and have loved them all, so I knew I had to read this as soon as possible. I will admit that I had pretty high hopes and expectations going in - not only due to who the author is but also because the description sounded original. I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed. I can't go into much detail about the plot without getting into spoiler territory, but I will say that the story itself was unique and wholly original. The author brings Vega's world to life with vivid imagery and detailed descriptions - to the point where it felt like I was there alongside her. The characters were all well formed, even the more minor ones. Vega, the main character, was a great lead and I really enjoyed getting to know her throughout the book. I loved watching her grow, learn, and mature on so many levels during the story. She was realistic with good qualities and bad ones - just like anyone else. One major thing I loved was that the author wrote the book in the first person point of view. This is by far my favorite for lots of reasons, but mainly because I think it allows the narrator and the reader to connect on a deeper, more personal level than any other writing style. In my opinion, the first person POV was a perfect choice for this book and I'm so incredibly happy it was written this way. I felt really connected with Vega early on in the book, and my bond with her only deepened as we went on the journey together. What she felt, I felt. What she experienced, I experienced. It was exactly what I love when it comes to writing style - all the feels like they're my own. I definitely recommend this book to fans of the author, fans of YA fiction, fantasy, romance, and readers who like astronomy and stars.
