Analiese Rising
Author: Brenda Drake

Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Publication Date: January 8, 2019
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Description:

Half-Blood meets Antigoddess in a thrilling, romantic new series from New York Times bestselling author Brenda Drake.

When a stranger gives Analiese Jordan a list of names before he dies, the last thing she expects to see is her own on it. Not. Cool. Her search for answers leads to the man’s grandson, Marek, who has dangerous secrets of his own. Both are determined to unlock the mystery of the list.

But the truth is deadly. Analiese is a descendant of the God of Death, known as a Riser, with the power to raise the dead and control them. Finding out she has hidden powers? Cool. Finding out she turns corpses into killers? No, thank you.

Now the trail plants her and Marek in the middle of a war between gods who apparently want to raise an army of the Risen, and Analiese must figure out how to save the world—from herself.

The classroom smells like a funeral home.

Hushed voices pulse over the pairs of students hunching over trays spaced across the counters. The odor of bodies fresh out of gym class mingles with the scent of formaldehyde.

Hair dampens at my temples. A crematory would be cooler.

Not many have finished their assignments. Only a few overachievers sit in the rows of empty desks on the other side of the room, their tasks completed, proud smiles on their faces.

Mrs. Cryer shuffles around the tables watching over us—a reaper waiting for lost souls, her bony finger pointing out errors. She shuffles around with purpose. She shuffles around without direction. Then she stops at our table, her eyes peering over reading glasses.

“Mr. Bove and Miss Jordan, you two are falling behind,” she says, a disapproving tsk in her voice. She only uses last names when she wants to emphasize her warning. “Best hurry before class ends.”

She continues shuffling around.

Biology is my least favorite class. Mrs. Cryer’s assignments are outdated. It’s her last year teaching, her retirement long overdue. Stern and direct, she’s not the sort of teacher I usually like, but I do. There’s an underlying kindness to Mrs. Cryer. A kindness hiding in her eyes, evident in her actions.

One of the things I like about my school: my brother, Dalton, is in the same grade. We’re not twins or anything. Actually, we’re cousins. His parents adopted me when mine were killed in a boating accident on Lake Como in Italy. I don’t remember them. I was two when that all went down.

The thing I hate about school: Dalton’s in my biology class.

“Come on, Ana.” Dalton slides the dissection tray closer to me. “I did all the setup. Just make the first cut.”

The little green body looks rubbery—almost fake—crucified to the tray with pins as it is. I push strands of dark hair from my face with a latex-gloved hand. I could’ve opted out of this barbaric ritual of separating body parts from an innocent frog.

Why did I even agree to this?

Brenda Drake is a New York Times bestselling author of young adult fiction. She grew up the youngest of three children, an Air Force brat, and the continual new kid at school. Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother's animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. So it was only fitting that she would choose to write stories with a bend toward the fantastical. When she's not writing or hanging out with her family, she haunts libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops, or reads someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).

My breath tastes sour in my mouth with the thought of Mr. Conte watching me while I never suspected he was there. Eyes staring, camera on me. How can I ever feel safe again, knowing what I do now?
I shake my head to rid myself of the thoughts, but the fears remain.
“All right. I hope there’re answers in here.” I open the other two doors of the cabinet. An old-style safe takes up the entire space—bottom to top. “What do you think is in this? A body?”
Crap. I just said that out loud.
Marek’s brows are a straight line over his dark brown eyes, and his lips are even straighter. “He was a good man,” he says, and I wonder if he’s trying to convince himself or me. “A loving grandfather.”
It sounds like he’s quoting Adam Conte’s eulogy. “I’m sorry. It’s just… Well, put yourself in my shoes. Your grandfather was stalking me.” I search the front of the safe for a way to open it. “There isn’t a knobby thing on this.”
“A knobby thing?” he repeats, watching me curiously. All the tiny hairs on my arms rise, and my breath quickens.
“You know, a spinner. To unlock it.”
He smiles. I like his smile. It’s a bit crooked and shows his almost-straight teeth. His right canine sticks out just a little past the rest of them. I bet he had braces when he was younger and didn’t wear his retainer at night when he was supposed to, like me. My front teeth are a tad off because of it.
I run my hand across the cold gray metal door. There isn’t a latch or anything I can find. My fingers bump over an etching near where a knobby thing should be. It isn’t light enough in the basement to see, so I use the flashlight on my phone and study the marking. It’s a nautical star. The size of a pendant.
I glance over at Marek. He’s studying the hinges on the other side of the safe.
“Your necklace.”

http://www.chapter-by-chapter.com/tour-schedule-assassin-of-truths-by-brenda-drake/

Assassin of Truths (Library Jumpers #3)
Author: Brenda Drake
Publication Date: February 6, 2018
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Description:

The gateways linking the great libraries of the world don’t require a library card, but they do harbor incredible dangers.

And it’s not your normal bump-in-the- night kind. The threats Gia Kearns faces are the kind with sharp teeth and knifelike claws. The kind that include an evil wizard hell-bent on taking her down.

Gia can end his devious plan, but only if she recovers seven keys hidden throughout the world’s most beautiful libraries. And then figures out exactly what to do with them.

The last thing she needs is a distraction in the form of falling in love. But when an impossible evil is unleashed, love might be the only thing left to help Gia save the world.

OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES:

Assassin of Truths is the exhilarating final installment in an absolutely wonderful young adult fantasy series that will leave readers with closure, but still wanting more. After reading the first two books and knowing that this was the last one, I had lots of hopes and certain expectations for it. I'm so incredibly happy that this novel lived up to and even surpassed my expectancies. There are so many series that start out really strong only to tank when it comes to the following installments. This book is just as good - if not a bit better - than the first two, which was a very happy surprise for me.

As with the first two books, a ton of stuff happens throughout the story - to the point where I can't elaborate much on the plot because of potential spoilers. There were a ton of fantastic secondary characters that I enjoyed getting to know on a better level. Gia continues to evolve throughout the book. She's wiser, more mature, confident, determined to do what has to be done in order to finish the war - no matter the costs (and there are definitely some big ones). She's a realistic character with both positive traits and faults, and I was able to easy reconnect with her right away. The romance between Gia and Bastien was sweet and I loved watching them continue to grow closer as the story evolved. As I mentioned a couple reviews ago - I don't normally do the "book boyfriend" thing but in this case, Bastien definitely makes my list. Talk about swoon!

Another big plus for me was the author's choice of writing style. She uses the first person point of view - which I'm a huge fan of for several reasons. The story is told from Gia's perspective, so we really get to know her on a deeply personal level. I think it's a perfect fit for the series and captures the inner workings of Gia's heart and mind, allowing the reader to really identify with her character. The author used vivid imagery and lots of detailed descriptions that brought each aspect of the story to life before my eyes. I easily slipped back into Gia's world from the beginning pages of the book, and I didn't come back out until I had finished the novel (which I ended up doing in a matter of a few hours). The last book in a series is always bittersweet because you usually get a good amount of closure, but it makes me sad that there will be no more new books to look forward to. I know for a fact that I'll be re-reading this series plenty of times, so I guess it's not really goodbye for me at least. :) Very highly recommended for fans of fantasy, along with fans of young adult fiction, paranormal, contemporary, and even romance!

Brenda Drake grew up the youngest of three children, an Air Force brat, and the continual new kid at school. Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother's animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. With kids of all ages populating Brenda's world, it was only fitting that she would choose to write stories with a bend toward the fantastical for both younger readers and the young at heart. And because she married her prince charming, there's always a romance warming the pages. Her favorite books are The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, Kings Row by Henry Bellamann, and Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. When she's not writing, she hosts workshops and contests for writers such as Pitch Wars and Pitch Madness on her blog, and holds Twitter pitch parties on the hashtag, #PitMad. In her free time, Brenda enjoys hanging out with her family, haunting libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops, or just reading someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).

Guardian of Secrets Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

http://www.chapter-by-chapter.com/tour-schedule-guardian-of-secrets-library-jumpers-2-by-brenda-drake-presented-by-entangled-teen/

Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2)
Author: Brenda Drake
Publication Date: February 7, 2017

Publisher: Entangled Teen

Description:

Being a Sentinel isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens.

Sure, jumping through books into the world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.

And if that isn’t enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.

Maybe. If she survives.

OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES:

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world's most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik's world and her own, before both are destroyed.

Guardian of Secrets is the exhilarating second installment in an absolutely wonderful young adult fantasy series that will leave readers begging for more. Since it's the second book in the series, I highly recommend reading the first book before this one. It's not completely necessary, but there are references to things that happen in the first book - and you might get a bit lost if you haven't read it. That being said, I'm so incredibly happy that this novel lived up to any hopes I had for it. There are so many series that start out really strong only to tank when it comes to the following installments. This book is just as good - if not a bit better - than the first, which was a very happy surprise.

A ton of stuff happens throughout the story - to the point where I can't elaborate much on the plot because of potential spoilers. There's a serious love triangle between Gia, Arik, and a new character named Bastien. I'm not usually a fan of love triangles, but this one didn't bother me at all. I loved the romance and watching Gia's relationships with both guys develop throughout the story. Gia herself evolves a lot in the book. She's more mature, confident, and determined to do what's right. She's a realistic character with both positive traits and faults, and I was able to easy connect with her right away. The rest of the characters were all rounded with their own personalities to make them unique. I really loved getting to know each of them and I can't wait to see where the next book will take each of them.

I can't wait for the next installment so I can see where the author will take the plot and the characters next. Very highly recommended for fans of fantasy, along with fans of young adult fiction, paranormal, contemporary, and even romance!

Cover Reveal: Touching Fate by Brenda Drake

Touching Fate
Author: Brenda Drake
Release Date: October 13, 2015
Publisher: Entangled Teen: Crave

Summary from Goodreads:

Aster Layne believes in physics, not psychics. A tarot card reading on the Ocean City Boardwalk should have been a ridiculous, just-for-fun thing. It wasn't. Aster discovers she has a very unscientific gift—with a simple touch of the cards, she can change a person's fate.

Reese Van Buren is cursed. Like the kind of old-school, centuries-old curse that runs in royal families. Every firstborn son is doomed to die on his eighteenth birthday—and Reese's is coming up fast. Bummer. He tries to distract himself from his inevitable death...only to find the one person who can save him.

Aster doesn't know that the hot Dutch guy she's just met needs her help–or that he’s about to die.

But worst of all…she doesn't know that her new gift comes with dark, dark consequences that can harm everyone she loves.

Brenda Drake, the youngest of three children, grew up an Air Force brat and the continual new kid at school until her family settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Brenda’s fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother’s animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. So it was only fitting that she would choose to write young adult and middle grade novels with a bend toward the fantastical. When Brenda’s not writing or doing the social media thing, she’s haunting libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops or reading someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).
