The Brightest Night is the thrilling third book in a fantastic YA science fiction/fantasy series that fans of the author and the genre are definitely going to want to get their hands on. Before I start, I want to make a confession: I haven't read the original Lux series. I know, I know. I've heard nothing but amazing things about it, but I just haven't gotten around to it. Since this is kind of a spin-off series, and given how much I adore it, I know I have to go read them as soon as possible. That being said, I have to break this down into what I loved the most about this book because this is one of those novels where I could ramble on forever about why I loved it so much. Because I did - so, so much.

Characters: I continued to adore Evie as the main character. The story is told from the first person point of view, from Evie's perspective. We really get to know her on a deep level because of this writing style, which I absolutely loved. We get to know her innermost thoughts, hopes and fears, dreams and doubts, memories, and so much more. I immediately connected with her from the very beginning of the series and it felt like seeing an old friend again when I started this one. And of course there's Luc, the other major character in the novel. He's a bit more complicated. Don't get me wrong - I love him. Definitely book boyfriend material - and I don't usually do that whole thing. Luc is very self-assured, cocky, smug, and can be a bit mean at times. He's got the bad boy thing going all the way. But then there's the other side we get to see - the sweetest and most sincere person, especially when it comes to Evie. He's the classic bad boy with a heart of gold and I almost never fall for guys like these in books. I never see the appeal. BUT I totally fell for Luc in the first book and I love him more with each installment - if that's even possible. Like I said, I don't normally do the whole "book boyfriend" thing and I almost never go for the "bad boy with a heart of gold" - but Luc is different. He makes my heart dance and melt and flip-flop the entire time. I'm totally in love with him. Evie and Luc are the epitome of the perfect couple and usually I hate that too because that kind of thing doesn't happen in real life. It's only for books and movies. But I couldn't help it - I loved them together and I will admit to be incredibly jealous of Evie on multiple occasions.

Story: The main thing I think I loved about the book was the characters and their relationships, but the story itself was really interesting and I loved learning even more about the different species (if you can call it that), their history, their powers, and everything else. As I mentioned, I haven't read the original Lux series, so I wasn't familiar with the Luxen before reading this series. After getting to know Evie, Luc, and some of the other major characters better, I loved catching up with them. There's some action and suspense in this book, but nothing like the first two had. It's still an amazing story line and you can tell that it's leading up to something huge in the final book. 

Series: Another huge thing I love is that this is part of a series and we still have one more to go. I want - no, NEED - more of this story. I have to find out what's going to happen in the next book. There's a lot happening and I have a sinking feeling that the author is going to break my heart. But that book isn't going to be out for awhile and I definitely will be re-reading this entire series before the last book is released. And I need more Luc. I want to get to know him better and get to know Evie and the others better too. I want to watch Luc and Evie's relationship develop and grow into what's possible between them. (Cue a bit of swooning.) Anyways, I'm done rambling because I could keep going forever and not make any sense. If you were a fan of the Lux series - you need this book. If you're a fan of the author's - you need this book. I definitely also recommend it to fans of YA science fiction, fantasy, dystopia, romance, and aliens. READ THIS BOOK (SERIES) NOW. You won't regret it.

Before I start, I want to make a confession: I haven't read the original Lux series. I know, I know. I've heard nothing but amazing things about it, but I just haven't gotten around to it. Because I did - so, so much.

Characters: I adored Evie as the main character. The story is told from the first person point of view, from Evie's perspective. I immediately connected with her from the very beginning of the story. I also have to talk about Luc, the other major character in the novel. He's a bit more complicated for me to explain. Don't get me wrong - I loved him. Definitely book boyfriend material - and I don't usually do that whole thing. Luc is very self-assured, cocky, smug, and can be a bit mean at times. He's got the bad boy thing going all the way. But then there's the other side we get to see - where we learn about his horrible past and the reason why he's so interested in Evie, even though it seems like he doesn't even like her for most of the time. He's the classic bad boy with a heart of gold and I almost never fall for guys like these in books. I never see the appeal. BUT I totally fell for Luc. I don't even know why. It's kind of like with Evie and her feelings for him - he's confusing and annoying and can be a jerk, but there's some pull there that can't be explained or ignored. And I definitely felt that way while reading. I was rooting for them the whole time and was so happy how the story ended. 

Story: The main thing I think I loved about the book was the characters and their relationship, but the story itself was really interesting and I loved learning about the Luxen, their history, their powers, and everything else involving them. As I mentioned, I haven't read the original Lux series, so I wasn't familiar with the Luxen before reading this book. I found them fascinating and I can't wait to learn more about them and about what's coming in the second installment. There's a pretty big surprise in the novel, but I figured it out way before it's revealed. I think it was because there's a lot of hints, clues, and foreshadowing happening - to the point I felt like it was completely obvious. Besides figuring out the big twist, there were other smaller twists that intertwined with the major one that I didn't see coming and made the story all the more interesting. Although they felt small compared to the "big reveal" they made a big impact on the characters and the plot itself. I'm excited to see where all the characters will fit in during the next book.

Series: Another huge thing I love is that this is just the start of a new series. I think I would've cried if this was just a stand alone. I want - no, NEED - more of this story. I need more Luc. I want to get to know him better and get to know Evie and the others better too. I want to watch Luc and Evie's relationship develop and grow into what's possible between them. Making my way through the narrow pathways between the tables, I headed back toward the bathroom. Brock’s gaze flickered over my face and the line of his jaw softened. “It’s been a really long time since you and I have sat and talked to one another. I know you have every reason to hate me. I don’t blame you.”

This company is important to me, and even if I’m not fighting, representing the Academy, I still need to be a part of it.” 

Lowering my gaze, I squirmed in my chair. Of course I knew that. No matter what had happened, that would’ve never changed for him. 

“I love scouting, looking for fresh talent,” he continued. “As the GM, I can still do that. I can give back to your father for everything he did for me. I need to do that. Especially considering how badly I let him down.” 

“How in the world did you let my father down?” I asked, genuinely curious. “You’ve won championships for him. Brought so much attention to the—” 

“That’s not what I’m talking about.” Tone serious, he held my gaze. “You never told him why you were at Mona’s that night.” 

I stilled. 

“If you had, he would’ve—” 

My eyes snapped to his. “Brock.” 

“And I would’ve deserved everything I had coming to me,” he continued, leaning forward. “And the only reason why I never told him you were there because of me was because you made me promise not to.” 

Closing my eyes, I pressed my lips together. I had made him promise not to say a word. I’d begged him, because I knew what would happen if he’d been honest. Brock would’ve lost everything. 

The knot was back, expanding in my throat. I couldn’t sit here and think and talk about these kinds of things if I was going to be able to make this job work. Curling my hands together, I opened my eyes. “What happened back then has nothing to do with now. It can’t.” 

Brock leaned back and straightened. 

“And I don’t want to talk about it,” I continued, struggling to keep my voice steady. “We don’t need to talk about any of that for us to work together.” 

He was silent for a moment, his body deviously relaxed, but he was like a coiled cobra, and could strike at any moment. “I don’t agree with that, but I’ll let it go.” 

Some of the tension seeped out of my shoulders even though I had a feeling there was an unspoken “for now” at the end of what he said. “That’s all, then? I would like to get my office set up and get to work.” 

Brock nodded and pushed off the desk. Walking around it, he scanned the paperwork on his desk. “I do believe we have a meeting today with the sales team. Two o’clock.” 

“Sounds good.” I rose on oddly shaky legs and turned to the door. Everything felt surreal. 

“Jillian.” 

Stopping, I faced him. “Yes?”

I lifted my right hand, reaching for my iron stake out of instinct, even though I knew it would do no good against the prince. 

“You shouldn’t do that.” His voice was deep with what reminded me of an English accent. “I know you want to, but it would be very, very unwise of you, Ivy.” 

My hand twitched. 

Creepy Prince smiled slightly. “Your friend has been very helpful.” 

That got my hackles up. I slid my sunglasses onto my forehead and forced my tone to stay calm and level. “I’m sure she has. Speaking of Val, happen to know where I can find her?” 

His lips curled in a semblance of a smile as he stepped closer. The prince was tall, taller than Ren, who was pushing six foot two. My entire back stiffened as I forced myself to hold my ground, even though every instinct demanded that I run and run super fast, because he had almost killed me once before. Correction. He would have definitely killed me if he hadn’t realized what I was and had, I guessed, healed me. 

“I’ve been waiting for you,” he said, instead of answering my question, his pale blue eyes fixed on mine. 

My hand curled into a useless fist. “That is extremely creepy to hear.” 

That cold smile returned. “Why don’t we talk? There are seats across the way.” 

“Yeah, that’s not going to happen.” 

The slow smile increased but never reached his eyes. “Oh, I know it is.” 

Fine hairs rose on my arms. 

“What exactly can you do right now?” he said in the same coldly polite voice. “Refuse me?” Creepy Prince laughed, and it wasn’t a bad sound. Again, it was something that was just cold, as if he were mimicking what a human would do. “You can’t.” 

“I can.” My palm itched to grab the thorn stake secured under my pant leg, but I held still. I might be reckless, but I wasn’t stupid.

My fingers tightened around the slender remote. “I was thinking that if the prince can sense me, why hasn’t he showed up here?”

“Sexed up dickhead?” I repeated. 

“Uh-huh.” Tink dipped the straw as one would a dancer. “Remember when I was telling you how I saw the prince getting it on with three females once? He’s totes sexed up. And he’s a dickhead. In other words, he has no empathy or compassion. No humanity.” 

“Most fae don’t.” 

Tink twirled the straw. “Yeah, but the ancients are worse. They’re as far away from human as you can get. He’s going to have to work on wooing you.” 

I slowly shook my head. “That’s…” There were no words. 

“That’s what I’d do.” Tink dropped the straw and whipped around toward me. “Or he’s plotting something major and any moment he’s going to knock down the front door and storm the place.” 

“Wow.” A fine shiver curled down my spine. “That’s really a relaxing thought.” 

He zipped over to the couch and sat on the arm. He tipped his head back and stared up at me. “Don’t worry. I’m here to protect you.” 

I just looked at him, because other than ordering shit off of Amazon, the only strength he had was the unique ability to annoy the crap out of me while somehow still managing to be endearing.
