The Lost Codex Blog Tour: Excerpt

THE LOST CODEX (The Collectors’ Society, #4) is LIVE!
Don't miss the conclusion of this incredible series!

Allies, once inseparable, splinter until they break apart.

An insidiousness carves its way through Wonderland, challenging the land’s very existence.

Battle lines will be drawn as pages, long languishing in darkness, are finally illuminated.

Swords will clash, blood will be spilled, and lives will be lost.

For what is written can still be erased.

My window is opened, tiny as it may be, and I do not waste it. I dart forward, the vorpal blade firm in my hand as I mentally count down seconds. The beast releases a mournful gurgle of frustration, its elongated whiskers and scaly jowls limply sagging around massive teeth. When I skid to a stop, the tips of my leather boots collide with its tail.

Another gurgle sounds, one ripe with helpless fury.

A satchel is thrown to the ground before I pry thick scales off with the end of my blade. “My apologies.” I gasp as I wrench off bits of its tough hide. “I promise, I’ll depart momentarily.”

Its body shudders, as if allowed, it would quake with indignation. Once I reach the count of ten, I shove my treasure into the satchel and sprint out of the jabberwocky’s lair.

Seven.

The earth beneath my feet rumbles.

Six.

Jubjub birds explode from the trees at the sheer intensity of the beast’s wrath.

Five.

Rumbling turns to assured quaking.

Four. Three.

I barrel over broken branches and bushes, my hair snagging upon greedy twigs.

Two.

I shift my sword, lifting up a free arm.

One.

Jace grabs hold, lifting me up to settle between his chest and his stallion’s withers. I take hold of the reigns, laughter burbling from the both of us as we gallop through the remaining thicket. Bursting into the Dark Meadows, sunlight warms my face. My smile is so wide, my cheeks hurt. My lungs sting, the breath from them comes in exhilarated bursts.

The Caterpillar often accuses me of enjoying life on the edge of my blade. His point holds validity, because goodness, do I feel alive right now.

BLURB:

Power is a strange and broken thing.
He was the sun god, the god of healing and song.
And prophecy.
Apollo has lived alone for centuries, content to spin out the years wandering a new and strange world, lost in the past and endless versions of the future. He has cut all ties with the remains of Olympus and his power, and hidden himself in humanity.
His twin thinks he’s depressed, spending his time in coffee shops, hospital waiting rooms, and concert halls…and nothing matters. Not really.
Until her.
Iris. With her teasing mouth and soulful music and eyes that remind him of the past.
He can’t resist her smile.
A girl as wild as he was, once, with a poet’s tongue and the body of a siren, who for one night makes him forget all the years and everything he gave up.
And he can’t stop fate.
Gods knows he’s tried.
He can’t help taking her.
Even if he knows better.
When Iris wakes up screaming, caught up in visions of the future, Apollo realizes that he didn’t leave his power quite as far behind as he thought.
He’s the god of prophecy and he’s been running from it, for centuries.
Iris is everything he has to avoid.
Now he has a furious Oracle on his hands, his sister trying to fix him, and someone is killing the gods.
It’s not just his tenuous sanity that hangs in the balance this time.
It’s all of Olympus.
Godhood really wasn’t supposed to be this hard.
Artemis slams through the door.

She is still wearing her ceremonial garb. Her hounds are seething at her sides, and her eyes are cold and deadly as she storms through the door of my apartment and into the tiny kitchen with all the force of a midnight storm. Just as cruel and cold and devastating.

"Artie," I say, my voice dry and vaguely annoyed.

She ignores me, stalking closer to Iris, who sits still and wide-eyed as a goddess examines her for faults.

I'm kind of absurdly proud of my girl for not squirming under that gaze. I've seen fucking Hades squirm under it. My sister is a sweetheart, for sure, but she's also the goddess of the hunt, and she's a fucking force to be reckoned with.

"What the fuck are you doing with my brother?" she snarls, her voice low and deliberate. Like the quiet pad of a predator stalking its prey.

"I think I'm having coffee, if he ever remembers that's what he was supposed to be doing in the kitchen," Iris says, giving me a dirty look.

I jolt into action and watch from the corner of my eye as Artemis stares down at my new Oracle.

"What favor did you extract for this power?" she snaps, furious. She's almost shaking with it and for a heartbeat, I wonder if Iris will be the exception to this rule, too.

My handmaidens are toys to be played with and broken. My priests are the same. I've never lifted a hand to stop Artemis from venting her anger against my chosen.

But my Oracle has always been untouchable. Maybe it's because she knew Del, the first one, and she has a sentimental streak (that she vehemently denies) or maybe it's because she doesn't want to test me. Doesn't want to pit her considerable strength against my own.

Maybe it's a simple as she knows that my Oracle is special to me, and won't raise a hand against her because she doesn't want to hurt me.

Whatever the reason, my Oracle has never been touched. Has never been harmed. Not by Artemis. But now, watching the way my sister bristles and snarls, and stares at the unblinking Oracle in her sun chair, my kitten in her lap, I wonder if now she will.

Artie has spent most of the past few thousand years, worried about me and tending to me in my madness. An insanity brought on because I am an idiot and refused to listen when Del said, so many years ago, that some prophecies are not meant for even me.

There are a few things that will never change, despite everything else that has. When I call, my sister will come. Always. It is the unshakable truth that my entire world is built on, from my first memories to this day. So when I piece it together, I don’t think. I slide my phone out, even in the hospital room while Iris murmurs at her brother and Heath eyes me like I might break her. Stupid boy. I already have. I text her and slide the phone away. I don’t need to watch to know she’ll answer, any more than I need the answer to know she’ll be at my apartment when we return. This is Artemis, who has made a life of taking care of me and worrying about me. I listen to Heath and Lily talk around Iris, listen to her increasingly fragmented babble, and when Heath sends Lily a confused look, I intervene. Catch her hand and let a thin trickle of power seep from me to her. “We had a very long day, and she didn’t sleep well. I think I should probably take her home and let her get some rest. Do you mind?” Heath does. I can tell, the way he’s bristling but Iris slumps into me and yawns, impressively, backing up every lie I’m spinning. “I’ll be back tomorrow, ok? You just. You rest. I’ll be back tomorrow.” She’s still looking over her shoulder when I pull her from the room. Her eyes are wide and serious when we duck into a stairwell. "What happened to him?" she asks. Staring at me like I might give her answers. Like she has the right to demand answers from me. Smart girl. I tuck her hair back, behind her ears and ignore the low growl of warning it earns me. "If I promise to tell you when we reach my apartment. Will you trust me a little bit longer, sweetheart?" Her eyes narrow. "Last time we got to your apartment, you and I didn't do much in the way of talking." I grin at that. Because. Fair point.

A Note From N: A few months ago, a friend tagged me in a writing prompt. The word was Apollo and the 500 word short story inspired this book. The Greek pantheon has always been a favorite of mine, and slipping back into that world was intoxicating. I couldn’t shake my slightly crazy Apollo who liked coffee and lived a little too mortal for a god. So I wrote this book, even though I shouldn’t. Because I couldn’t not. Because I loved it and I needed to write something that wrapped me up and consumed me. And this was it. I hope you give my crazy god a chance and I hope you love him as much as I do.

I spend a lot of time walking.

Artie says its in my nature. That I will eternally chase the sun. But then, my twin is a bit annoying. I just like to walk.

Back when the world was young and I was young, I rode the winds and sunbeams, and when that got old, I walked.

I met Del there. On a dusty road outside what would one day become an empire’s capitol, and then turn to dust.

I met many people on the road, over the years.

But that doesn’t matter.

Today matters.

Artie says I spend more time in my head than I do in reality, and that’s part of my problem. I think reality is a little bit fucked up when you’re an immortal god, but I’ve long since stopped arguing with her.

I wake before the sun rises. Always. Slip into a pair of scuffed up jeans and loose flipflops that look like they’ll fall apart but that fit like a second skin. I wiggle my toes around and tug on a black tshirt and a beanie over my long hair, and then I push out into the darkness.

I live in the center of the city, in a shitty walkup apartment over a Korean takeout place. It’s dirty and needs to be ripped down and rebuilt, and the lights in the hallway don’t work—neither does the deadbolt.

But it does the job, and it’s close to three of my favorite coffee shop and a little bar that has the best indie bands on the weekends. Sometimes, when I leave the windows open, I can hear the music from my bed, and I don’t even have to leave the apartment to get my fix.

But now, the sun is rising and with it, me.

There’s a spot, a few miles from my place, that I can go. Climb to the top of the ten story building and sit on the edge of the roof, my feet dangling into nothing. It’s not the tallest building—there are others that obscure my vision, but there’s a sliver of horizon, where everything breaks perfectly to let me see for miles.

I wait for her here.

My sister thinks it’s ridiculous for the god of the sun to live in a place that is perpetually covered in cloud.

What she doesn’t understand, what she’s never understood is that my power isn’t bound just because I can’t see her.

I can feel the sun.

I can feel the way the air lightens and the heavy weight of darkness eases back, a little. The way the power that is mine, that I have mostly ignored for centuries, tingles awake like a limb that hasn’t been used in too long. Tempting to shake out and flex, just to make the pins and needles pain go away.

I shove that down and twist my ring and tilt my head back, until I’m smiling into the clouds, and far beyond the dreary gray, my girl rises to greet the day, and me.

I sit there for a long time, while the sun creeps up and the city comes awake. It’s a strange place for me to choose as my own, but I like it. It reminds me of the little temple where Del lived, all those centuries ago. She always liked the way the mist clung to the grass and the way the shadows played in the valleys and between the sides of the mountains. She would tease and tell me that even as powerful as I was, I did not rule everything.

Del always liked knocking me into my place. Liked to forget that I was a god.

A wide eyed girl shaking with terror and screaming with visions, cowering from me.

I blink.

A girl with a smirk and violet eyes that seem worried and ancient, and her fingers dig into her skin, drawing blood even as she laughs and kisses me.

Del.

I shudder and sway on the edge of the roof. The past is blurry. So damn blurry, but there are moments that stand out, sharp and painful.

This is a bad idea, Father.

I smile, tight and bitter. She would be so proud of herself, that she was right. My girl was always damn good at reaching into the future, even further than the ones who came before her.

I shake that thought, shake the fingers of madness that clutch too tight today, and push myself off the edge of the building. Power scratches along my skin, clawing at my shoulder and I dangle there, balanced on my toes on the edge of the building, poised between sky and sun and nothingness.

Two Summers Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

Two Summers
Author: Aimee Friedman
Genre: YA Contemporary/Fantasy
Release Date: April 26, 2016
Publisher: Point
Formats: Hardcover, ebook, audiobook
368 pages

Find It: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, Goodreads

Description:

ONE SUMMER in the French countryside, among sun-kissed fields of lavender...

ANOTHER SUMMER in upstate New York, along familiar roads that lead to surprises...

When Summer Everett makes a split-second decision, her summer divides into two parallel worlds. In one, she travels to France, where she’s dreamed of going: a land of chocolate croissants, handsome boys, and art museums. In the other, she remains home, in her ordinary suburb, where she expects her ordinary life to continue — but nothing is as it seems.

In both summers, she will fall in love and discover new sides of herself. What may break her, though, is a terrible family secret, one she can't hide from anywhere. In the end, it may just be the truth she needs the most.

From New York Times bestselling author Aimee Friedman comes an irresistible, inventive novel that takes readers around the world and back again, and asks us what matters more: the journey or the destination.

Two Summers is a creative and intriguing young adult contemporary novel that will surely be a huge hit, especially among fans of the genre. I don't normally read contemporary novels - there seems to be so many trends happening that they've almost become templates, and various authors only have to insert their characters and slight changes in order to have a novel. In short - they're beginning to all blend together with hardly any standing out from the rest. I'm very happy to say that this book gives a fresh breath of air to the genre and assures that it doesn't follow any template.

What initially drew me to the book was the description -how one teenage girl's summer is split into parallel worlds after making a last minute decision. Summer, our main character, ends up having two separate and completely different experiences during this time. In one, she goes to France to visit her father, and in the other she stays at home. Both worlds are full of promise and surprises - things will happen that Summer never thought possible, both good and bad. Although they are completely different, both are magical and will change Summer for the rest of her life.

I really liked Summer as the lead character. She's well rounded, down to earth, smart, pragmatic, and shy - but she has faults like everyone else, along with parts of herself that she doesn't even know about yet. I loved getting to know Summer throughout the book, in both worlds, as she discovers who she really is and what truly matters in life. The book is told in the first person point of view from Summer's perspective, so readers get the chance to know Summer on a deeply personal level and can connect with her character almost immediately. I love the first person POV, and I think the author was spot on to use it in this book. Both Summers were different in their own ways as well as how they respond to occurrences and situations in each world, so it was fascinating to see one character in differing views. By the end of the book, I felt like I really knew Summer and had been alongside her throughout everything that had happened - which was quite the emotional roller coaster in both scenarios. This was a wonderful contemporary novel that incorporates a bit of fantasy and magic to create a delightful summer read.
Aimee Friedman was born and raised in Queens, New York, in an apartment filled with books and different languages. She wrote her first story at the age of five, and was off and running from there. Aimee wrote all through her years as a student at the Bronx High School of Science and then Vassar College. After graduating from college in 2001, she became a children's book editor, a job she still does, and loves, to this day! Aimee published her first novel, the New York Times bestseller, South Beach, in 2005, and is now the author of several novels for young adults, the latest being Two Summers. Aimee lives in New York City, where she can usually be found writing in cafes, window-shopping, or searching for the perfect iced latte.

(3) winners will receive a signed finished copy of TWO SUMMERS and TWO SUMMERS travel bags - US Only!
