The Lost Codex Blog Tour: Excerpt

THE LOST CODEX (The Collectors’ Society, #4) is LIVE!
Don't miss the conclusion of this incredible series!

Allies, once inseparable, splinter until they break apart.

An insidiousness carves its way through Wonderland, challenging the land’s very existence.

Battle lines will be drawn as pages, long languishing in darkness, are finally illuminated.

Swords will clash, blood will be spilled, and lives will be lost.

For what is written can still be erased.

My window is opened, tiny as it may be, and I do not waste it. I dart forward, the vorpal blade firm in my hand as I mentally count down seconds. The beast releases a mournful gurgle of frustration, its elongated whiskers and scaly jowls limply sagging around massive teeth. When I skid to a stop, the tips of my leather boots collide with its tail.

Another gurgle sounds, one ripe with helpless fury.

A satchel is thrown to the ground before I pry thick scales off with the end of my blade. “My apologies.” I gasp as I wrench off bits of its tough hide. “I promise, I’ll depart momentarily.”

Its body shudders, as if allowed, it would quake with indignation. Once I reach the count of ten, I shove my treasure into the satchel and sprint out of the jabberwocky’s lair.

Seven.

The earth beneath my feet rumbles.

Six.

Jubjub birds explode from the trees at the sheer intensity of the beast’s wrath.

Five.

Rumbling turns to assured quaking.

Four. Three.

I barrel over broken branches and bushes, my hair snagging upon greedy twigs.

Two.

I shift my sword, lifting up a free arm.

One.

Jace grabs hold, lifting me up to settle between his chest and his stallion’s withers. I take hold of the reigns, laughter burbling from the both of us as we gallop through the remaining thicket. Bursting into the Dark Meadows, sunlight warms my face. My smile is so wide, my cheeks hurt. My lungs sting, the breath from them comes in exhilarated bursts.

The Caterpillar often accuses me of enjoying life on the edge of my blade. His point holds validity, because goodness, do I feel alive right now.

  The Forgotten Mountain - cover

About THE FORGOTTEN MOUNTAIN:

After years spent in Wonderland, Alice Reeve learned the impossible was quite possible after all. She thought she left such fantastical realities behind when she finally returned to England.

Now Alice has become a member of the clandestine Collectors’ Society, and the impossible has found her again in the form of an elusive villain set on erasing entire worlds. As she and the rest of the Society race to bring this mysterious murderer to justice, the fight becomes painfully personal.

Lives are being lost. Loved ones are shattered or irrevocably altered. Each step closer Alice gets to the shadowy man she hunts, the more secrets she unravels, only to reveal chilling truths. If she wants to win this war and save millions of lives, Alice must once more embrace the impossible and make the unimaginable, imaginable.

Sometimes, the rabbit hole leads to terrifying places.
The van door behind us slides shut. A click signals Marianne’s adherence to my wishes, and then we three descend upon the front door, the crunch of dead leaves and twigs beneath our feet cutting through the uneasy silence the gloom sunrise has brought. In a surprising show of gentlemanly manners, the A.D. moves to open the door. When the handle does not depress, a half smile curves his lips. “It’s locked. But no worries. I can have it picked open in no time.”

“There is no need.”

Darkish-blonde brows scrunch together. “But—”

“Stand to the side, please.”

When he fails to move at my thinly veiled order, Mary not so gently yanks our companion away. The door before us is thick. The handle is ornate. It is a beautiful door, no doubt chosen specifically to adorn a building as fine as Bücherei. It takes me three strong, measured swings of my war hammer against the handle and its surrounding area to break it apart and permanently scar its beauty. Picking a lock is kind, respectful even. A picked lock can be relocked. I do not wish this door to close behind me. I do not wish to be respectful of Bücherei.

The time for genteel manners is gone.

The A.D. is in danger of catching flies with his mouth as he ogles the door’s remnants. For someone who professes to be so clever, he certainly underestimates ladies far too often.

Stale darkness, oppressive and opaque all at once, looms before us. I am unafraid, though. I am not even taken aback. I believe in the impossible, after all. I have seen, lived the impossible.

I step past the wreckage into the house.

Don’t miss the first book in this series, THE COLLECTORS’ SOCIETY!
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22735431-the-collectors-society

The Hidden Library is the exhilarating second book in an adult romantic fairy tale series. It picks up where the first book left off - with Alice and Finn, along with the rest of the Collector's Society, are preparing to hunt down a dangerous villain who is destroying other people's legacies. They will attempt to unravel the mysteries surrounding them, in an attempt to put an end to the villain's plans. Although working together on the case, it turns out that secrets abound. Alice and Finn each have secrets of their own that must stay hidden for various reasons, they have some that they can share with one another, and with this case, they find themselves falling deeper into all the secrets that Wonderland holds - ones that will ultimately test their loyalties, put them up against both new and old enemies, and worst of all - some will expose truths so dangerous that they put Alice and Finn (along with many others) in serious peril. What secrets are meant to be kept and which should they reveal? Can they trust each other - or anyone else - with the hidden knowledge they're harboring? Secrets - one way or another - might destroy them all in the end.

I absolutely adored the first book in this series and I couldn't wait to read this installment. I have to admit that the first novel gave me high expectations and hopes for this book - but I had nothing to worry about. It was just as good as the first with tons of action, adventure, some serious mysteries, and romance. I loved slipping back into the world the author created for the series; it was so easy for me to do that it happened without me realizing it. It felt as if no time had really passed since I 'left' and I was able to get completely lost in the story. Alice is still a fantastic female lead for the series. She's strong - both physically and mentally - and these only grow throughout the book. She's also practical, intelligent, determined, and devoted to their cause. Her character growth was easy to see as the story progressed, and I really liked watching Alice become more stable and confident in her roles in both the Society and in Wonderland. Of course, there's Finn - who also undergoes some character growth throughout the book. I loved watching Alice and Finn's relationship continue to develop as the story went on. It was a big part of the story and I feel that it was portrayed in a perfect way. (No spoilers here - you'll have to read it for yourself to find out what I mean!)

The setting continued to be utterly realistic and the vivid imagery and detailed descriptions - especially of Wonderland and it's inhabitants - had me literally enchanted during the entire book. I could easily close my eyes and see Wonderland come to life before me - and while I was reading the story, it felt like I was right there beside Alice the entire time. We get to learn more about the Collector's Society and Wonderland in this installment, which I loved. I was fascinated by any and all the information we're given about both - histories, secrets, hidden truths, scandal, inner workings. It gave me a better understanding of them both and I loved learning as much as I could about everything and anything concerning them. I hope that the author puts more of this type of information into the next book, so we can get an even clearer and more detailed picture of Wonderland and the Collector's Society, as well as everything that goes along with them. The writing, aside from the amazing descriptions and imagery, was fast paced but not rushed. I felt like the story had a natural flow to it - there were times when I could sit back and enjoy reading the story; while at other points I was on the edge of my seat, reading as fast as I could to see what was going on and what would happen next. Overall, this was a beautifully written and thrilling second book in a very unique series. I'm already counting down the days until the next book is released. I very highly recommend this book - and the series - to fans of fairy tales, fantasies, fairy tale retellings, action and adventure, mysteries, and romance. There's something for everyone to enjoy in the series, so I encourage everyone to at least give it a chance. It might surprise you and drag you into the story like it did with me.
